Kevin Smith Praises Marvel’s What If…?, Especially Its Finale

Marvel's What If...?

Marvel’s What If…? is believe it or not the first animated series that is tied to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That’s why so many were curious about how it would turn out as it was “connected” and yet not exactly canon in terms of the “main timeline”. Per se at least. The first season completed its run recently, and while not everyone was impressed with every single episode, many were pleased with the overall result.

One person in particular that was really fond of Marvel’s What If…? was that of Kevin Smith. A man who is well-versed in superheroes and cartoons. On his show Fatman Beyond, he talked about what really stuck out to him about the finale for Season 1:

“I watched that sh-t at three in the morning man and bawled my eyes out. It was f-cking fantastic,” Smith told his cohost Marc Bernardin. “They stuck the landing on that show with such wonderful writing and such imaginative storylines. I’m supposed to be a writer and even I didn’t see that sh-t coming. There was even a trailer that indicated he [the Watcher] was going to bring them all together and I was like ‘No, I can’t believe they’d do that,’ and bam, they f-cking did it.”

Granted, he did have some criticism, including the much-questioned inclusion of a version of Gamora despite her not having an introduction in season 1 (which the team noted was due to the pandemic and her tale will be told in Season 2). But even with that, he praised the series as a whole.

Season 2 has not been confirmed as of yet, but if it is made, it will apparently go and deal with “Phase 4” much more than the first set of films did, and that could lead to many different stories, changes, and questions about…what if…?
