Several months back, the existence of gold and silver versions of the Mario amiibo were leaked. Nintendo fans freaked out: Amiibo collecting was about to get worse, not better! While it sort of did get worse, it wasn’t the blingy Mario’s fault. The gold Mario turned out to be a Walmart exclusive, but it wasn’t that hard to find, and its eBay price is barely above its retail cost. The silver Mario will be even easier to get, as it’s coming to any store that stocks amiibo.
The silver Mario amiibo will be part of amiibo Wave 4, a lineup that includes Charizard, Pac-Man, Wario, Greninja, Lucina, Robin, and unfortunately, the retailer-exclusive Jigglypuff and Ness, which you don’t have a prayer of finding if you didn’t preorder them within the 20 minutes they were available. This wave will also include a restock of the Marth amiibo from Wave 1, and the limited pack of Splatoon amiibo (Splatoon comes out on the same day).
Despite its palette swap, the Silver Mario will function like any normal Mario amiibo, meaning it will unlock content in the following games: Mario Party 10, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Mario Kart 8, Hyrule Warriors, and unexpectedly, Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy for 3DS.
Amiibo Wave 4, including the silver Mario, will launch on May 29.
