Gremlins: Secrets Of The Mogwai

Warner Bros, just released a long list of every animated show it has in development for HBO Max (which we’ll get to eventually) and Gremlins: Secrets Of The Mogwai was nowhere on it. Given this and the relative lack of news regarding the series in recent months, it would’ve been safe to assume the project had been shut down….but nope, WB confirmed today it’s still active, and revealed the lineup of actors that are supplying the voices.

The prequel cartoon takes place in 1920s Shanghai, where a young Mr. Wing (he was “Sam” in those days, and both his eyeballs still worked) discovers Gizmo the Mogwai for the first time. Not long after, he teams up with a 12-year-old street thief named Elle and they set off on a quest to find Gizmo’s lost family and return him to them. It’s a quest Sam is destined to fail, given that Gizmo is still with him by 1984. But at least he tried.

Sam has a lot more to worry about than just obeying the Three Rules of Mogwai Petsmanship, however. Riley Greene, a power-hungry English industrialist, is after Gizmo, and he has his own army of Gremlins to do his bidding. He’s also a world-class treasure hunter and a master of black magic. From that perspective, Sam looks to be massively outclassed, but we’re sure he’ll figure something out.

Izaac Wang has been announced as the voice of Sam Wing. A.J. LoCascio will be voicing Gizmo and Gabrielle Green is playing Elle. The always awesome Ming-Na Wen is in the cast, playing Fong Wing, Sam’s mother. You’ll also be hearing B.D. Wong as Sam’s father Hong, and James Hong as his grandpa (just named “Grandpa”). Matthew Rhys plays the villain.

Gremlins: Secrets Of The Mogwai was announced in the summer of 2019 and we still have no idea when it’ll show up. If you can’t wait and want to see Gremlins NOW, we have weirdly coincidental news…a Mountain Dew ad was just released yesterday that serves as a follow-up to Gremlins 2 (at this rate, it’s as close to 3 as we’ll ever get). A middle-aged Billy Peltzer hands a graying Gizmo a Dew, which is about as bad an idea as you might assume.

The neatest thing about the ad is that for three seconds we get the reveal that Billy and Kate had a daughter and she has her own punk-haired Mogwai, and now we REALLY want Gremlins 3 so we can find out more about that pair, but alas. Start typing your fanfiction now.
