Universal Pictures has begun exploring the possibility of making a live-action movie of Microsoft Studios’ Xbox video game franchise, “Gears of War” and have assigned a screenplay writer and producer to the project.
Universal and Microsoft announced late last year that it would not merely be a rehash of the “Gears Of War” video game but would instead be a new story set in the “Gears of War” universe on the planet of Sera where squadrons of commandos battle swarms of alien creatures called Locusts.
“Gears of War” debuted in 2006 from Epic and was an immediate success, leading Microsoft to eventually acquire the franchise in 2014.
The most recent version of the game – “Gears of War 4” – launched late in 2016.
