You have to hand it to whoever directed the making-of documentary for Frozen II that’s on Disney+ right now…it’s honest on a level that most making-ofs aren’t. It fully admits the entire production was flying by the seat of its pants and the writers were still working out the plot WHILE animation was in progress. The end product, while not horrible, was far from Frozen 1. If we’re doing this again, it’d be wise not to repeat that mistake.
Fortunately, Disney agrees. At D23 tonight, they announced they’re delaying Frozen 3 into 2027 to make sure they tailor everything to royal perfection. Usually when animated films are this far away the studio has nothing to show, but this time the crew managed to put together a concept painting that suggests what they have in mind. It’s very….Sleeping Beauty-y.
It’s Else and Anna together on a horse with no name, but it’s made out of ice and has a sparkly mane. You’re an ice goddess and you took that long to make yourself a horse. But who’s that shadow creeping in from the bottom? The Horned King from Black Cauldron? Venger from the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon? A guy in a viking helmet? We’ll have to wait a long time for definitive answers.
There will be no delays for Moana 2, the production once slated to be a Disney+ series but upgraded to feature film. And they’ve been generous with the previews — this is the third one and we’re still over three months away from release. What can they say except….you’re welcome.
The first Moana was rare for Disney films in that it had no real villain, but it looks like that will change for Moana 2. That wicked presence made of tornadoes and bugs looks like it’ll be trouble, and if Moana and Maui manage to get past her, they’ll then have to deal with….THE TALKING COCONUTS! Click the trailer if you doubt me.
Moana 2 will open in theaters November 27. Frozen 3 will open whenever it opens.
