Freeform’s Cloak And Dagger Cancelled At Two Seasons

Remember Freeform’s venture into Marvel Superhero television? it’s over already. Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger, starring Aubrey Joseph and Olivia Holt as teenagers with respective power over darkness and light, has not been renewed for a third season. Deadline broke the news, and pointed out the 40% drop in ratings from Season One.

“We are so proud of Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger and the trailblazing stories this series told,” Freeform said in a rosy statement that’s kinda hard to believe given the circumstances. “We are also grateful to our incredible talent Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph for bringing these beloved characters to life, and showrunner Joe Pokaski for his vision. We’d like to thank our partners at Marvel Television for a wonderful two seasons and are we are hopeful that we can find another project together.”

Anyone who’s surprised by this doesn’t pay much attention to Freeform. The cable network has one of the itchiest trigger fingers of any, and rarely lets any series they produce live longer than two seasons. In this case, the channel simply waited around until the contracts expired on its two leads — they were that apathetic.

You WILL get to see the Freeform versions of Cloak and Dagger one more time, as they’ve already been announced to cameo in the third season of Hulu’s Runaways. Rest assured that if Runaways were a Freeform show, it would be cancelled by now too.
