2009's first suprise hit continues to surprise as it comes in at number one for a second straight weekend. Paul Blart: Mall Cop earned another $21.5 million and a total of $64.8 million.

What is a little surprising, then again maybe not to some is Underworld: Rise of the Lycans debuting in second place. It earned $20.7 million for it's debut. With a budget of $35 million, it'll make it back and then some after worldwide box is factored in and video sales.

For comparison, this one is a prequel and didn't star Kate Beckinsale like the other two did. This debuted in less theaters than Underworld: Evolution did in January of 2006 (265 less) thus Rise of the Lycans earning $6 million less in it's opening weekend than Evolution. Les Wiseman has said they'd like to do at least one more this time going ahead into the future and follow Selene and Michael after the events of Evolution. These movies have been cheap to produce for Sony and have continued to make money. So we'll see if they give the go ahead for one more movie.

Though with Sony producing both Paul Blart and Rise of the Lycans, they can't be complaining too much.

Gran Tornio landed in third place with $16 million and a $97.5 million total.

Depsite losing 27.3% of it's business from last weekend, Hotel for Dogs actually climbed one spot and landed in fourth place earning $12.3 million and a $36.9 million total.

And Slumdog Millionaire opened in another 829 theaters this weekend. It jumped from tenth place to fifth place making $10.5 million and a $55.9 million total.

Also opening this weekend was Inkheart which came in seventh place with $7.7 million.

Out of the top 12 this weekend is The Unborn (13th), Marley and Me (16th), and Bedtime Stories (18th).

Opening next weekend are three new movies. First up is Taken (rated PG-13) starring Liam Neeson, Famke Janssen, Maggie Grace, Katie Cassidy, and Goran Kostic.

Next is The Uninvited (rated PG-13) with Emily Browning, Elizabeth Banks, Arielle Kebbel, and David Strathairn.

And finally we have New in Town (rated PG) starring Renee Zellweger, Harry Connick Jr., J.K. Simmons, Siobhan Fallon Hogan, Frances Conroy, Mike O'Brien, and Rashida Jones.

Here are your numbers....

1) Paul Blart: Mall Cop- $21,500,000 ($64,800,000)
2) Underworld: Rise of the Lycans- $20,700,000 ($20,700,000) NEW!
3) Gran Torino- $16,000,000 ($97,576,000)
4) Hotel for Dogs- $12,360,000 ($36,955,000)
5) Slumdog Millionaire- $10,550,000 ($55,916,000)
6) My Bloody Valentine 3D- $10,050,000 ($37,725,000)
7) Inkheart- $7,725,000 ($7,725,000) NEW!
8) Bride Wars- $7,000,000 ($48,702,000)
9) The Curious Case of Benjamin Button- $6,000,000 ($111,044,000)
10) Notorious- $5,700,000 ($31,795,000)
11) Defiance- $5,432,000 ($18,329,000)

Wow. I'm somewhat surprised that Inkheart came at seventh place. I know that the critic reviews of the film have been kind of poor, but most of the viewer reviews I've seen were pretty positive. I've read the whole book series and I'm planning on going to see the film either later today or next weekend. I'm sure it isn't as good as the book, but I've heard that it stays fairly close to the book as well so I don't think it could be that bad either. I'll just see for myself how good the movie is. In all honesty, as long as it's better than Eragon's movie adaptation, which just happened to be the last movie I actually saw in theaters, I'll be happy.

Disappointed Milk didn't get an Oscar bump. I want people to see the movie, if only so come Oscar night people don't complain about it being "some movie nobody's seen."

The Uninvited and New In Town look boring, so I may not go into a theater until...the Friday The 13th remake (what is it with me and Rated R horror movie remakes? I'll tell you that soon)

Gran Torina's still doing a great job.

Paul Blart will be number 1 again next weekend.

About my Rated R horror remake thing...I saw My Bloody Valentine last night with my dad. It was BRUTAL. I didn't even care for it's flaws and lack of a 3D experience, it was just plain awesome, and it really hitted the spot on on the old-school horror movie experience, too.

To be honest, I suspect the Underworld sequal will do okay- cause let's face it, 20 mil out of 35 mil is a good start- but if they do a fourth movie, they're probably going to release it straight to dvd.

Would Kate Beckingsale really settle for that?! They want the fourth film to be about Selene and Michael. I doubt they'll recast this late in the series.

Wow, really disapointed to see Inkheart do poorly, I was hoping it would start another successful book to movie series.

Why? Inkheart's underperformance may someday lead to Hollywood to finally cease relying upon the rights to foreign-originated works as a source of cinematic screenplays and start churning out more original concepts of their very own for a line of cinematic movies instead.

I said probably. Not definately. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see a fourth movie released in theaters, but they might just cut their (minute) losses and release it to DVD.

And have Kate Beckinsale and Scott Speedman had any hits recently? I can't recall any off hand...

Also, Leave me update from the now closed earlier Blart forum, I have now seen the film and it is as funny as heck. Coming from Adam Sandler, who starred with the star Kevin "King of Queens" James, I expected it. Paul drives one of those axle'd scooters you'd find in Alladin hotel and casino/Las Vegas,NV, and there is "Epic Movie" and "Red EDye" cutie Jayma Mays.

Excellent movie...saw it at Pico Rivera Theare [Paramount/Whitter corner..plug plug.!]

[Woulda seen it in my home town only the Sony releases aren 't showing there.ARGH!]

So...I guess America is the only one that hates Tom Cruise:

Military thriller "Valkyrie" landed atop the foreign box office.

In its first weekend in international markets it earned $13.2 million in 13 territories.

MGM/UA pic, handled by Fox overseas, scored a respectable $5,803 per-location average and racked up its best numbers in Germany with $3.4 million, South Korea with $2.7 million and the U.K. with $2.5 million. The Tom Cruise vehicle, which has cumed $80 million domestically, launches next weekend in 13 more markets, including Russia and Spain.

I am so sad that InkHeart didn't do well. I wanted InkSpell made next, that was my favorite of the book series, yah I am a fan of the books LOL. I thought they did a good job on the film, but maybe that's cuz I haven't read the first one in a while to juge. My only hope is that they still go with the second film any ways, I mean can you blame InkHeart for doing so badly with all these Golden Globed nomanies in the ringer? Than agian that didn't stop MallCop, awe I don't. I am just confused how MallCop is doing so well, though maybe thats just bitter grapes coming from me

Maybe people just weren't interested in Inkheart. If a film adaptation of a book series doesn't have hot teengaers, it can't sell. And that my friends is the very, very, very sad truth.

Well the only fantasy books to movies that do well are the ones that a lot of people have actually read. Who hasn't read the Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, The Chronicles of Narnia, and Twilight series of books. But I've never heard of ones like City of Ember, Spiderwick Chronicles, or Inkheart. I'm surprised that these lesser known books keep getting adapted as they've failed on a routine basis.

Well, in Hollywood, if one franchise is a hit; try to do the same with another.
