2009's first suprise hit continues to surprise as it comes in at number one for a second straight weekend. Paul Blart: Mall Cop earned another $21.5 million and a total of $64.8 million.
What is a little surprising, then again maybe not to some is Underworld: Rise of the Lycans debuting in second place. It earned $20.7 million for it's debut. With a budget of $35 million, it'll make it back and then some after worldwide box is factored in and video sales.
For comparison, this one is a prequel and didn't star Kate Beckinsale like the other two did. This debuted in less theaters than Underworld: Evolution did in January of 2006 (265 less) thus Rise of the Lycans earning $6 million less in it's opening weekend than Evolution. Les Wiseman has said they'd like to do at least one more this time going ahead into the future and follow Selene and Michael after the events of Evolution. These movies have been cheap to produce for Sony and have continued to make money. So we'll see if they give the go ahead for one more movie.
Though with Sony producing both Paul Blart and Rise of the Lycans, they can't be complaining too much.
Gran Tornio landed in third place with $16 million and a $97.5 million total.
Depsite losing 27.3% of it's business from last weekend, Hotel for Dogs actually climbed one spot and landed in fourth place earning $12.3 million and a $36.9 million total.
And Slumdog Millionaire opened in another 829 theaters this weekend. It jumped from tenth place to fifth place making $10.5 million and a $55.9 million total.
Also opening this weekend was Inkheart which came in seventh place with $7.7 million.
Out of the top 12 this weekend is The Unborn (13th), Marley and Me (16th), and Bedtime Stories (18th).
Opening next weekend are three new movies. First up is Taken (rated PG-13) starring Liam Neeson, Famke Janssen, Maggie Grace, Katie Cassidy, and Goran Kostic.
Next is The Uninvited (rated PG-13) with Emily Browning, Elizabeth Banks, Arielle Kebbel, and David Strathairn.
