"Toei Animation Blasts Off With Hypergalactic"

"Toei Animation is one of the most successful animation studios in the world, owed in no small part to their anime adaptions of the most popular manga in existence — Dragon Ball, One Piece, et al. There was a time when the mainstream wasn’t aware of Toei outside of Japan, but now everyone knows who they are. And Toei plans to use that recognition for their first animated film targeted at a Western audience.

Called Hypergalactic, the film uses CG animation and tells the story of an adventurous teenage girl and her baby brother, who live in a future time when pedestrian space travel is possible. They’re seeking the help of Ohkan, the forgotten protector of Earth (here’s where details are light, as the release doesn’t explain why Ohkan would be forgotten or how he protects Earth)."

Anyone interested in a Toei Animation film made first for English (Western) audiences?

Is this going to be Toei doing something a la Pixar or Dreamworks. If American cartoons like Avatar the Last Airbendercan borrow from anime, anime can also borrow from American cartoons. Well, there is a Western director and writer, so MyAnimeList will probably not count this as anime. Could this be the first ever anime film to cross $100 mil in the US considering only Pixar/Disney/Dreamworks style animated films seem capable of doing that.

Hmm, my immediate thought was is this 'Journey to the West meets space opera'? English first? And brought in Sonic's Naoto Oshima for designs? Quite an interestesting move on Toei's part. Hope it pays off.

This reminds me of that Sparx animated film...or like a sci-fi take on the Monkey King story in a cartoon (or anime?) I can't remember the name of.

Spark? From like 8 or 9 years ago? Patrick Stewart was in it?

I'm curious on what will be the British originals for Max once the streaming service becomes available in the country next year aside from Harry Potter.
