Preamble: This one goes back to when the Wonder Twins were in college, and the issues they have to face are so very real in the here & now. Characters copyright DC Comics/Hanna-Barbera/WarnerMedia, except for new creations.
Chapter 1:
Craig Grant was a rising star on UCLA's football team. A sophomore, Grant was inserted into the lineup due to an injury, and has led the Bruins to three straight wins heading into the annual rivalry game with crosstown rival USC, which was to be played on Thanksgiving weekend.
Four days before the game, Grant, who lived in Los Angeles year round, went out with his girlfriend, Kathy Pearson, and four friends, to a small all-ages club about a mile from campus. Understandably, Grant was besieged for autographs from adoring fans until the bouncers moved his party to a private booth.
Around 10:45 pm local time, Craig and his party started for home. However, Craig found the tires on his car were missing, replaced with cinder blocks. Abruptly, he was set upon by three masked men, as a fourth held Kathy, holding one hand over her mouth to keep her from screaming. Her eyes widened with horror as she saw one of the men raise a cinder block directly over Craig's head.
"He never deserved to have you in the first place.", the man said, as the sickening thud of the block making contact with Grant's skull echoed through the club's parking lot.
====================================================
It was 1:30 am Metropolis time. Daily Planet reporter/photographer Jimmy Olsen took a call from UCLA freshman Jessica Franklin.
"Jimmy? Is Joanna with you?", she asked, referring to her roommate and best friend, Joanna Fleming, Jimmy's girlfriend.
"She's sleeping.", came the reply. "What's the trouble?"
Jessica quickly filled Jimmy in on the murder of Craig Grant.
"Geez, Joanna just came home earlier tonight for Thanksgiving, and she's headed home to Gotham later this morning. If my boss wants me on this, we'll fly out later."
"Jimmy? What's going on?"
Joanna, as Jayna, staggered out of bed, wearing a blue lace nightgown.
"Jessica just called. One of your classmates was just murdered.", Jimmy replied, filling her in.
"Craig is a year ahead of us.", Jayna replied. "We've met, and it's his girlfriend who is in civics class with Jessie & I."
=====================================================
"Apparently, someone doesn't like the idea of mixed relationships on campus out there.", Perry White opined later that morning at the Planet. "Grant's the 4th student murdered in the last month because of it."
"And the first one at UCLA.", Jimmy put in. "According to Joanna, the others were at USC, Pepperdine, and UC-Davis. Same MO. Victim had his skull caved in with a cinder block while his girlfriend was forced to watch."
"We have someone at our West Coast bureau that can handle this.", White said. "You and Joanna can just go on to Gotham for Thanksgiving."
"Yes, sir."
Five minutes later, Jimmy reached the parking lot, where Jayna, with a bonnet over her head to hide her pointed ears, was waiting.
"Any luck, honey?", she asked.
"Perry's already got someone in LA on this. To me, that's code for, he thinks it's too big for us."
"Too big? Seriously?"
"Babe, when you stop and look at the big picture..."
"Oh, wait. I get it. Ours is a mixed relationship, too. If it got out that you were privy to all of my identities..."
"Then you're a target, too."
=================================================
Back in Los Angeles, Clark Kent, on loan from WGBS-TV, had been asked by his old boss to look into the Grant murder. However, his interview with Cindy ran into an unexpected snag.....
"She's not talking to any reporters, Mr. Kent.", Alex Pearson, Cindy's uncle, said. "We warned her it was not a good idea to accept a date with that young fellow, but she didn't listen."
"Mixed relationships are rather common out here, from what I gather.", Kent replied. "I'm sure you've heard of Quincy Jones and Peggy Lipton, for example?"
"Celebrities is one thing. Common folks mixing races is another. Good day."
"Now I know why Perry asked me to look into it. ", Clark thought as he left. "If Jimmy brought Jayna back out here on short notice, he'd be putting her in danger."
