"Zelda’s Got Skills In This Echoes Of Wisdom Trailer"

zel.jpg

"Nintendo dropped a new five-minute trailer for The Legend Of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom this morning. As you know, it’s going to be the first (canon) Zelda game where you play most of it as the character mentioned in the title. A lot more of her kingdom was revealed this time.

This version of Hyrule seems to be a blend of the old and the new. Deku Scrubs have returned to the series for the first time in over 20 years — we missed the little guys. This game may explain why Zoras went through an appearance change between Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time, as both versions coexist here as the “River Zora” (old) and the “Sea Zora” (new). They don’t appear to get along. Clearly one of them is going to take over, but how?

We don’t know how big Hyrule is going to be, but you’ll have multiple means of traversing it. You can possess an enemy and let it take you somewhere. You can activate warp points across the kingdom that will let you cover great distances (we know this is standard now, but Zelda was doing it before it was cool). Bot most importantly, you can get a horse, and it looks like you’ll have many to choose from. You can summon a horse with a carrot, and they can leap over obstacles Zelda wouldn’t be able to pass on her own."

Not exactly. In some ways, Link is just lending her his power. In other words, she’s just using someone else’s skills. In any case, I believe that the idea is that she can only use her “swordfighter form” when it’s absolutely necessary; a “last resort”, you might say. This game is all about Zelda using her wisdom (emphasis on “wisdom) to save Hyrule.

My only real concern is the whole “how you solve this or that puzzle/get through the game is up to you” idea, especially after what happened with Tears of the Kingdom. After all, the players aren’t mind readers. Some puzzles may likely require a certain echo that players can’t possibly think to copy. It’s also frustrating when you think you have the solution, only to find out that you’re nowhere near it. To put it another way:

“Pee-Wee Herman” said:
When you’ve gone over something again, and again, and again, and AGAIN, like I have, certain questions get answered others SPRING UP!

It feels like you’re unraveling a big cable knit sweater, that someone keeps knitting, and knitting, and knitting, and knitting, and knitting, and knitting, and knitting!

That’s what it felt like (to me) playing TotK before I got the official guide, and my concern is what EoW will be like. Players shouldn’t have to scramble to the internet desperately looking for a solution they just…can’t…figure…out no matter how hard they try. That’s not what playing video games is about.

Alright, rant over.

The point is, as challenging as any game would need to be, I nonetheless hope that the puzzles don’t cause players’ brains to explode (sorry for the hyperbole). Something has to give, after all, and some players simply won’t be able to think of absolutely everything. “Try Everything” can only go so far before it becomes “Violation of Common Sense”. Still, we’ll see what happens with this game. I’m looking forward to the first game where you actually play as Zelda (and no, “that” game doesn’t count).

"New Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom Trailer Reveals The Still World"

zeldaeow.jpg

"Nintendo’s previous trailer for The Legend Of Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom was the first of theirs I know of to end on a cliffhanger. It established there are purple rifts tearing Hyrule apart, Zelda leaped into one, and then the preview ended. All questions were answered today as Nintendo’s new preview picks up directly where that one left off.

When Zelda enters rifts she steps into the Still World, the phantom zone where pieces of Hyrule are suspended in midair. This includes the civilians (most crucially Link, and Zelda’s father) and if Zelda doesn’t hurry and heal the rifts, they’ll all fade away! The Still World has a higher emphasis on isometric platforming than the overworld, and you’ll have to use the puzzle-solving tricks and powers you picked up there to traverse it. The Still World also appears to be where all the dungeons are. Entering is mandatory.

Some of you who saw the spell-casting, enemy-possessing, puzzle-solving method Zelda uses to fight adversaries wished out loud they could just use a sword. If that was you, you’re getting your wish…sort of. Somewhere in the game, Zelda will find a “mysterious sword” embedded in the rock, and when she pulls it out, she becomes a glowing blue swordfighter, with a convenient Hylian Shield appearing out of nowhere."
