The pregnant sock puppet is this show embracing the TV-PG of it all.

That is one weird-lookin' Pegasus.

I like the way the Burrito Wizard walks.

The Book Wizard getting eaten was a dark ending.

Amusing. ***1/2.

Teen Titans Go! "Titans Go Casual"

I didn't much like the episode but I liked the Titans' new business catchphrases.

But everything else was dumb. **.

Teen Titans Go! "Rain On Your Wedding Day"

You know what? I approve of that. "Irony" is one of the most misused words in the English language and it was nice to have a clear refresher course.

For some reason "literally" is misused even more, but we didn't get a lesson about that. Ironic. Literally. ****.

I think "Magic Man" is the first episode without all the Teen Titans in it. Just Beast Boy and Raven.

It was also pretty neat they delved into the origins of one of Raven's books that have been around since the start of the series. I think the first time it was used was when Beast Boy and Cyborg made duplicates of themselves.

Naturally, the old school dial FX when Raven enters the combo to get into the library made me laugh because... I'm old enough to remember it.

Pretty hilarious journey montage when to Raven's chagrin, Beast Boy's burrito magic came in handy. BB somehow defeating the monster with his tiny burrito sword, turning himself into a burrito for the 4 eyed wolves to eat, and the awkward ride off the staring dragon were hilarious.

Kinda neat there were 2 nods to season 3's "The Overbite" - the demons in the library were from the audience in the Dance Dimension and when Raven looks for Book Wizard's name in the intercomm listing - Dance Demon is on the list.

Ending reminded of the early years like when they were all dead and ghosts and it just ended on that. But can't be the first time it ended on someone getting eaten either.

3/16: It's bugged me several days already but I knew that book the demon girl pulled out of a shelf when Raven first arrives at the library was from somewhere. It was the evil book Raven buried that the others unearth in mid-season 1's "Books" and it makes the characters from the books real. Guess that's where it went after that episode, lol.

No Easter Bunny. Whew. But gross vestigial twin at the end. Ugh.

Another slim cameo of Harley like in "The Titans Show". Think I saw some nice little nods to Batman Returns - the armed penguin on Penguin's calendar - and Batman & Robin - Bane's mask was an item tossed out. I think there was the wood Medusa Mask that Psycho-Pirate wears. And the store front behind Batman - Broom Patrol instead of Doom Patrol, lol. Loved that this Batman's favorite Robin is Jason and Dick knows it, lol.

Teen Titans Go! "Egg Hunt"

Okay, that ending was nasty. Seriously. What is wrong with this show?

Speaking of which, I think nothing encapsulates the problems of this show more than the fact that it believes Jason Todd is cooler than Dick Grayson. What's especially infuriating is that it appears that in this continuity, it's actually true.

I love the idea that Batman dresses as the Easter Bunny every year to hand out chocolate to kids. Now as far as I'm concerned, that's secretly true in every continuity. Even Frank Miller's. "I'm the g.d. Easter Bunny!"

Catwoman having a litter box is funny, but also sort of degrading. But as bad as it is, it's not the most degrading portrayal of Catwoman ever. I was binge-watching Batman '66 on Blu-Ray a few years ago, and I can't believe I saw Julie Newmar being forced to lick milk out of a saucer. A real-life actress had to do that. On camera. For money. That's barely a step up from porn as far as degradation goes in my book. I was like "It's no wonder she left the show in season three."

Bad episode. But at least the Easter Bunny wasn't in it. *1/2.

UPDATE:

Is this the first time the Titans have learned Batman is Bruce Wayne? I know they did the reveal in the non-canon Scooby Doo parody but they bought it back. But I can't help feel like they did it before. Anyone else know if they have?

No, canon pretty much ebbs and flows for this show. They previously knew he was Bruce Wayne. I think in that "Walk Away" episode, Cyborg blabbed to Dr. Light that Batman was Bruce Wayne, for example.

Like others have said, I'm glad the bunny didn't make an appearance. Aside from the ending, I thought it was a decently funny episode. Gotta love how Robin just outs Batman like that.

Teen Titans Go! "Justice League's Next Top Talent Idol Star: Justice League Edition", Parts 1 & 2

The Justice League holds yet another talent competition, only this time they're facing off against the Titans. In order to be the most talented superhero team in the DC universe, Robin and Beast Boy must work together on a jazz performance.

You know in "Brain Percentages" when they were making fun of Lucy it was funny because not only was that episode actually a bit closer to when that movie came out but that's just such an absurd out there movie you wouldn't really expect many shows or sketches to mock it, let alone a kids series. So there's kind of a unique "oh way to actually do something no one else is going to do" sort of flavor to it. Kind of like when KND's "Operation A.R.C.H.I.V.E" had the cahoones to actually spoof the Second Resistance short of the Animatrix. Like who else would of done that? However this time around they're going after Whiplash not only a lot later but... honestly that's already been treaded ground other series have mocked. Plus unlike Lucy who is such an absurd concept having Beast Boy talking about using 100% of his brain allows him to go back in past and touch an unevolved ape to gain ultimate knowledge is just so silly even not knowing it comes from a movie, Whiplash is much more grounded where the "comedy" and drama from that movie come from the performances and just how well they are sold there. And quite honestly it's not funny seeing Scott Menville having to still do this goofy "mostly for kiddies" take on J.K Simmons Terrance Fletcher especially since you know you can't have any swears or really actually abusive yelling. Honestly Whiplash isn't really a movie you can easily make fun of without really not grasping what it's about but there are some directions you can take it. Heck The Simpsons actually did that well enough with Lisa but that not only had J.K Simmons in that episode but the joke was "oh she actually appreciates being motivated like that right away and actually uses it to be better" but in this episode you had to have Beast Boy go through the steps and them describing things like "break up with your girlfriend" isn't really nearly as funny. I do like how unenthused Starfire is as a replacement and being glad to be taken out the running but that was the highlight of that bit and once they have Robin do the "not my tempo" bit they make a whole lot of jokes on it and it just doesn't land. If you know the bit you know how limited they are here to go through with it and that limits the comedy you can get with it and if you don't well I guess kids like Robin generally yelling in funny outfits but it still doesn't work as actual comedy.

The rest of the episode is pretty middling as well. Honestly there were some decent idea for gags like the idea of the Teen Titans still being the laughing stocks of the DC Universe but they needed to actually come up with unique ways to retell those bits not just keep piling them on. Also the Harley Quinn show did the "Aquarium breaks and Aqua Man has to scurry to save his fish" bit wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better probably because in Harley Quinn they actually allowed Aquaman to talk unlike this show where yeah it is ridiculously limiting and inane the JL aren't given voices. I know you can't go with their movie voices but seriously especially if their competiting actually hearing them talk would of been funnier. Like through Batman's terrible magic bit if he was trying to act like it was so impressive and that somehow convincing everyone else it was because he was Batman or something it'd be funnier then no one else realizing it was lame. Plus again this one had Starfire cat jokes and Lady Legausus bits so... not really giving their A material. I did like Superman juggling planets (because it probably is a spoof on the silver age where he would do that) and the Titans rubbing in the JL faces they won before being crushed by Starro but... that's really it. The parody didn't work here and there weren't really any major laughs either so... pretty eh all around. The most interseting part was the reveal that we're getting a Night Begins to Shine 2. I'm hoping that attracts other celebs to do Night Begins to Shine covers because those were great the first time around. Oh and if we are seeing more musical acts, I wish the show would actually do some CN History and get Puffy Ami Yumi to crossover to reference their old CN series which has a lot in common with TTG. Come on guys you got the real Puffy to do a cover for your song last time; reference their show as it would lead to better jokes then referencing Whiplash.

Birdarang pretty much called it with his meta line in Part 1, I hope in vain this is the last one they'll do.

Starro crashing the show at the end was a great pay off for watching that 2 part slog. Still they did have some neat bits like Superman doing the Action Comics #1 cover nod, Wonder Woman's elaborate lasso Batman, lasso Gotham, and lasso Batplane - and the fist bump was cute, and it was a funny callback that Batman did a magic act since Robin did that in the first Idol Star 2 parter.

Edit: Just realized the jazz thing and BB & Robin was all a nod to Whiplash from 5 or 6 years ago with J.K. Simmons and Miles Teller. Robin's jazz outfit in Part 2 was the tell, Simmons had that outfit and BB's what Teller wore.

Teen Titans Go! "Justice League's Next Top Idol Star: Justice League Edition: Part One"

Ugh. The show does the meta joke about how the premise is getting stale year after year, but even if they do the meta, it still is. That's this show's problem in a nutshell. It redoes every slightly successful thing to death. Part of me was excited we're getting a "Night Begins To Shine" sequel and the more realistic part of me knows this show will do nothing but make me sick of the premise.

To be clear, repetition has been a staple in cartoons for decades from the Roadrunner, Tom and Jerry, and Scooby Doo on. But as a current TV viewer I don't accept it from a modern project. They should be able to come up with some new ideas. Especially with the stable of characters they have available to them.

Batcow, huh? Because this competition is far too degrading for Bathound.

This is one of the few fictional Universe in the DC Universe where the characters KNOW it is the DC Universe.

I want to know more about the Extreme Justice League.

Let's get to my two main gripes.

The slam on jazz is another thing to show the writers are lazy, uncultured Philistines and expect to get away with it by pandering to the kids in the audience who don't like jazz either. But it is an amazing and influential form of music that the show sounds utterly stupid and petty for ragging on.

The other main gripe is Robin's behavior. In an era of school shootings I don't find Robin's violent and bullying behavior remotely funny. I'm wondering why the CN censors let the producers get away with that since CN itself is trying very hard to launch an antibullying campaign. But Robin's sociopathy and abusiveness are not actual comedy. I find them upsetting because the producers aren't even bothering to make them cartoony or unrealistic. Actual real-life abusers talk the way Robin does. I don't understand why this show insists on making the audience hate Dick Grayson. That DC character has the worst luck because the biggest properties using him are this show's awful version, and Titans which is sickly a thousand times worse. Over the decades DC has tried SO hard to rehabilitate the character after Burt Ward made him such a lame punchline. But his two most visible media appearance make his an utter abusive sociopath. I don't like it, and I think DC Comics is worse off for introducing both kids and general audiences to the character this way.

That outright sucked. *.

Ugh. Lady Legasus? Ick. This whole thing was tiresome. But no lie: That Starro ending was pretty great. And well deserved. This two-parter was a steaming pile but Starro was a double-flush and spritz of Febreeze. **.

And yet Krypto is there oddly enough. *sighs* You know it just occured to me despite something like Krypto the Superdog being made for the 2-5 year old age bracket it was a much more respectful series to it's character then this one will ever be. Which I know now is the point of TTG but that's still not a good place to be guys as you can be really funny without you know just being empty calorie mush.

Let's get to my two main gripes.

Again in this particular instance, both are a reference to the movie Whiplash. The whole Jazz drumming and abusive teacher who yells at you throwing instruments and having to break up with your girlfriend to focus on Jazz is based on the 2014 Dameon Chazelle movie starring Miles Teller and J.K Simmons. And like I said even if you know it's a reference to that they don't do anything funny with it nor is it an out there enough movie for just the oddness or referencing it to be amusing enough. Especially since the whole abusive teacher was actually called out within the movie itself and you actually saw Miles Teller fight back and even report on J.K Simmons character abuse and still get one over on him in the end which yeah they don't do here. If this episode had BB had enough and start beating the crap out of Robin but the joke is Robin has now powers so it's a one sided fight and he ends up like crippled the rest of the episode and no one cares because of how much of a jerk he was it'd at least be a twist on things but yeah they didn't do that. So you just get the reference and if you get it you realize what they're doing but can't really do anything to make it that funny but if you don't... it still isn't funny either.

I also agree with how much love Batman gets and how many shows are dedicated to him even if he's not in him and all the movies he's in it does feel disrespectful how there aren't really any good versions of Dick Grayson out there in media right now. I guess the one from the New 52 styled DTV movies that was in Justice League Vs Teen Titans and Teen Titans: The Judas Contract and Batman Hush among other examples is the best Dick Grayson out there but even then he's not given any starring roles and that universe itself ended now. Then again I feel bad for Teen Titans fans in general because this show and Titans are it's current representations out there and neither is that respectful. Hmmm you know I still wish this series would just use it's "we can get away with referencing whatever if done in a goofy enough way due to how popular we are" status and just take shots at the Titans show. Since yeah as this episode showed they can get away referencing R rated movies why not their R rated counterpart series?
