I start this topic because I want to comment how the latests animated series of Spider-Man ("Ultimate Spider-Man" and "Marvel's Spider-Man") have somehow "broke the mold" about Spidey's classic stories and some unexpected twists that could be interesting to see again in the future.
1º) Let's start with "Ultimate Spider-Man":
- Harry Osborn as the classic incarnation of Venom. I know many of you, fans of Eddie Brock, would be pissed for this; but I see this as a refreshing twist. Classicaly, Harry followed his dad's steps an became the second Green Goblin; and in some cases (like the Ultimate Comics), as another goblin like the HobGoblin. Harry still became affected by his sick father, but becoming a different kind of monster than his father was kinda "refreshing". I still missed Eddie Brock, but this was an interesting change.
- A series showing Spider-Man as part of a team instead of his classic a lame "solitary wolf's role" had a very clever move, introducing some of Spider-Man's classic enemies as enemies of his teammates. Like Kraven having a story with White Tiger, or Scorpion with Iron Fist. A clear sign that Spider-Man has maybe too many enemies, and some of them could work for heroes who doesn't have their own enemies.
- The origin of some other enemies of Spider-Man were interesting twisted as "mutated" similar to Spider-Man; like Rhino and Vulture, leaving aside the old fact of being guys with suits.
- The first series where we had Curt Connors introduced with BOTH arms, then he lose his arm to have the excuse to turn him into the Lizard. I would have prefered Connors with both arms, and another version of the Lizard introduced; like the Iguana, for example.
- Amadeus Cho was a surprise in this show; even more when I expected him to debut in "Hulk and the Agents of SMASH" too. For a long time I expected Cho would eventually become his alter-ego Brawn and the Iron Spider's armour would be used by somebody else. Honestly, I thougth maybe Ollie Osnick (Steel Spider) could have inherited the armour.
- This series' version of Swarm was really interesting. Instead of a dead guy covered by bees, he was composed by nanobots; and this really opened a whole new world of possibilities.
- The crossover with "Jessie" was really unexpected, and some of you might call it stupid, but it was worthy of some laughs. Just the same as the crossover with "Phineas and Ferb". Since Spidey is known for meeting EVERYONE, I would have liked to explore more potential crossovers. Even if they were cancelled for years, "Kim Possible" and "America Dragon: Jake Long" were two great candidates to meet Spider-Man.
- The Spider-Verse arc gave us some "never before seen" Spider-characters from other realities, and I loved some of them. A vampire-slayer Spider-Man who looks like Blood Spider, I couldn't stop thinking about him working with Blade and the Howling Commandos. A cowboy version of Spidey with guns that shoot webs?; weird, bu really funny. And the evil version of Spider-Man, Wolf Spider, was an excellent touch. (A shame they didn't explore this villain more). "Petra Parker" was funny, but the whole "TG Universe" idea is more typical from DC than Marvel.
- It was an interesting twist from the series to create characters who actually gathered traces from different versions of them. We had a Kaine/Scarlet Spider who was named as "Ben Reilly", and a Madame Web who looked like Julia Carpenter with Cassandra Webb's suit. I would have liked to see more characters like these ones.
- One of my favourite things was Mary Jane becoming Spider-Woman, and the first hint of a romantic relationship between her and Peter in the future. Even more because her suit as Spider-Woman was based on the one used by her own future daughter in the comics, May "Mayday" Parker. However, I have to say, the idea of giving her powers with the Carnage's symbiote gave me the creeps continuosly. I didn't like seeing MJ turning her arms into blades, axes or other "killing weapons".
- The Spider-Slayer clones created to destroy Spider-Man were an unexpected surprise, but I could recognize that they were actually based on characters from the comics: A group of enemies of Julia Carpenter named "Death Web". Its members shared powers and abilities with the Spider-Slayers.
2º) Now, let's talk about "Marvel's Spider-Man":
- The first chance to notice is the fact that we have a Gwen Stacy who, instead of following her classic counterpart's story about dying at the hands of the Green Goblin, she becomes a heroine like her counterpart "Spider-Gwen". Honestly, I think I would like 616's history be rewritten to be something like this.
- This is not the first time Miles Warren appears in animated version, but this is the very first time we see in animation his alter-ego, the Jackal. Therefore, I expect the future episodes AND future season will give us an animated version of the Clone Saga.
- The character known as Nocturnal has never been seen in comics or other animated series, so I would like to see them explore this character in the future.
- Liz Allan is Screwball in this series? Well, Screwball was a silly character, but it could be interesting to explore more of this version. However, I just hope she won't end up like her comic counterpart, especially now that the stupid "Superior Spider-Junk" happened.
- Black widow with Spider-Powers, that's something I wanted to see in comics during the Spider-Island's arc. I'll just wish this would have been explored more, and see how Natasha would have evolved having the real powers of a "Black Widow".
- The HobGoblin's story is actually familiar to me, because I see traces from the 90's animated series, when the creation of the Green Goblin created the Green Goblin with a green explosion.
