Here is the trailer for Sony's upcoming movie Peter Rabbit:
.....yikes. I get that they need to expand the story to make a feature length movie, but this is being poorly executed. Beatrix Potter's stories are innocent and wholesome, not an "irreverent, contemporary comedy with an attitude" as the synopsis states.

Okay, I can get behind that it's live-action... but--

1. Why get Sony to do it, Sony's animation is better if the whole film is animated

2. Why not a completely animated movie ?!

3. Why this modernized setting?!

4. Why does this feel nothing at all like Peter Rabbit?!

This is about as far removed from a Peter Rabbit movie as you can get.

I'm not a hard person to please, I'm one of the few people who can talk positively about The Lorax. But this isn't even trying to resemble the books, this could be a sequel to Hop and nobody would notice the difference.

I don't use this wording lightly, but this is quite frankly an insult to Potter's original stories and I don't see how they can salvage anything decent from this.

Just when you thought this formula was finally dead.

And yes, this is pretty insulting to the original story.

I'm not surprised they're going this direction, trying to appeal to kids of today.

If there's one thing I would change is make McGreggor an old man that serves as Peter's longtime nemesis who Peter constantly pulls pranks on, coming to a head when the romantic interest shows up.

This young guy as McGregor thing just isn't cutting it. Which is weird for me to say since I've never even read the books, but it just seems like it'd fit better.

Also, fun fact despite being labeled as an SPA film, animation is being handled by Animal Logic, who does the Lego Movie and Happy Feet. It seems SPA, like with the upcoming movie The Star, will outsource their animation to various studios. It'll be interesting if this becomes more of the norm.

It was really cute... for the first 12 seconds. This isn't Peter Rabbit. It's a strange hybrid of Open Season and Hop.

Side note: if we actually get a real Peter Rabbit animated movie, I'd love to see it done in watercolor animation, like Ernest and Celestine :)
