Screen Resolutions

Random thought, but what screen settings does everyone have on their computers? Interested to see if there's a particular setting that the majority use, and perhaps a few oddballs.

As you know 1024x768 - 800x600 looks big and messy to me and anything bigger is squint worthy! Funny, once you have the size you like, trying any other size looks weird - even if you had the previous size for years...

I just switched to 1280x1024. It's not bad...

I have mine at 800x600. Not by choice. My parents and I all use the same comp and well you know old people...they need everything bigger in order to see it clearly We used to have it at the 1024x768 resolution. Might try to get it back there, see if they notice or not, hehe.

800x600 is fine by me. 1024x768 works, too, but the prior is much easier on the eyes.

quite so. And the problem with switching from one to the other is that one seems way too tiny for anyone to be comfortable with, and the other seems too bulky.

800x600, a big on the eyes plus not enough room and all, but 1024x768 has plenty of space to move around and all plus a bit more better for the eyes.

I'm running under 1024x768 on my 19" CRT. When needed I'll sometimes up the resolution to 1280x960.

Are the vertical pixel measurements matching the horizontal pixel measurements on your monitor? I've always found that resolution on my monitors to over compress images to appear rectangular.

Yes. Works just fine for me. Maybe you're thinking of 1280x720. That one makes my display look "letterboxed"

I'm currently on 1280x1024. It's awesome on my 19" PerfectFlat Viewsonic CRT. The only problem is that I practically throw my back out carrying the thing to LAN parties.

A rather wierd topic... Ah well, I live for wierd!

Currently, because of my freelance gig (and Pagemaker that is cluttered when it comes to multiple documents), its set at 1280x960... Normally, its at 1024x768. It would be too small on most monitors, but it fits fine on my 21".

Mine's also set at 800x600, for the same reason Barb's is. Plus the monitor's not a huge 21" flat one or anything, so a higher resolution's not really needed. (shrug) It works fine for me.

You could simply switch while you are on through your desktop properties and reverse it back when you finish it. I think for purposes such as Webbuilding it's good to occasionally look at a different resolution, whether you are on 1024/800 whatever just to get an idea how it looks. I must confess it's a task I should do myself and practise what I preach...

Egad, that is tiny and barely ledgable...makes me wonder who really uses that resolution. (plus, it's only 16 bit color at that res on my computer.)

(goes back to 1024 x 768....and millions of colors.)

It's just a happy medium between looking at large images and reading text.

Simply put, divide the horizontal by the vertical resolutions to determine the vertical pixels. Such as 800/600= 1.33 repeating, best known as an 4:3 aspect ratio. 1280/1024= 1.25, known as a 5:4 aspect ratio. There are an few monitors out there that have been designed around the 5:4 aspect ratio so I was curious as to if that was what your monitor was designed around because an few people once told me that every 4:3 ratio that they tried to run, would compress the images horizontally, and that they would have to shrink the horizontal display through their monitor adjustment controls.

To test this I create a 350x350 square on my paint program. Then I use a sheet of paper and make an mark on the sheet from the left to the right of the square, then using my marks, match the top to the bottom of the square.

Hmm, this probably looks better than yours. But this is still for the person who wants to go blind looking at a computer screen. Maybe if we had 21" monitors...
