Recently, I was watching Rugrats in Paris: the Movie (the best Rugrats movie ever!) and I've noticed how Chuckie's Dad thought it was strange that there's a Japanese theme park in France, and Dee Dee was hoping she would dine on fancy French cuisine instead of Japanese food. And with the giant fighting robots, and the Japanese theme park itself, I'm started to wonder:

Why is the movie taking place in Paris instead of Tokyo? I don't mean to be biased but I'm just curious and all.

I think it's because there is a Disneyland in France (which I have been to three times) and they wanted to parody that (a bit like what The Simpsons did with "Euro Itchy & Scratchy Land" at the end of the I&S Land episode) but then they liked the idea of Reptarworld but because Reptar is supposed to be a Japanese creation (as it is a full-works parody of Godzilla, which is also a Japanese creation) so they decided to make it a "Japanese theme park in Paris" not only to do the plot justice but to also make it very funny.

Well, that's what I think anyway.

But note that there is also a Disneyland in Tokyo. Then again, it doesn't raise the derision of Eurodisney (yes, I remember when it was called that, and in fact its opening ceremony was actually televised on ABC!).
I'm also guessing that they put it in Paris to let Lithgow and Sarandon do their hilarious attempts at French accents and to put in some Parisian landmarks, then again, what's with the lack of the Louvre?

I think it didn't really matter where they placed a Reptar Land in as long as they make the characters leaves the States for it. After all, most of the movie took place "within" the amusement park so would it really even matter if they went to Tokyo instead of Paris?

I guess the marrige scenes in the end between Chazz and lips lady would've been different if they were in Tokyo. But I guess thats just knit picking it.

Speaking of nitpicking, it's one word with one "k" in it.
Their other excuses to put it in Paris:
1. The whole "Spike pees on the Eiffel Tower" gag just wouldn't have the same impact with the Tokyo Tower.
2. French poodles look much better than Japanese dogs ;)

gives Toonmaster a right to nitpick more often

But, it wouldn't have made much difference if the theme park had been in Paris or Japan. True, Finster's love would've ended up being French instead of Japanese (thems the breaks with mirrors), but other than that, not much would've changed.

My guess: the animators wanted to draw French landmarks (Notre Dame Cathedral, the Eiffel Tower, and so on) rather than Japanese ones that nobody in the USA would recognize.

And what was Dexter's sister (from Dexter's Laboratory) doing in that movie? (Tommy's mother's name is spelled Didi, not Dee Dee.)

Say what?
Your original post included, "Dee Dee was hoping she would dine on fancy French cuisine instead of Japanese food." I replied that "Dee Dee" is Dexter's sister on Dexter's Laboratory (and also some villains on Batman Beyond and that future episode of Justice League Unlimited); Didi is how you spell Tommy's mother's name.

Old thread but found it by thinking the same thing
The movie is called Rugrats in Paris
but most of the movie has Japanese motif around it. Made no sense.
