"It’s become a common practice for game console manufacturers to release an upgraded “pro” version of their machines midway through a game generation. And it hasn’t really been a secret that Sony’s been preparing one for the Playstation 5. Today they confirmed the rumors and leaks, dished all the details and revealed when it will go on sale. But should you get one? …That depends on how rich you are.
As expected, the PS5 Pro promises marginal improvements to the already-existing features of the original PS5. The base PS5 has ray tracing, so the PS5 Pro has better ray tracing. The Pro can render more games in 4K at 60 FPS. The Pro has a larger internal SSD that can hold 2TB of your games (this just in: GTA 6 will be 1.5 TB large).
But then there’s the lucre Sony wants in return. They’re slapping a $700 sticker on this machine, the highest a mass-market console has been priced since the 3D0 in 1993 — and it doesn’t actually stop there. The disc drive isn’t included, and that costs another $80 (it is the same detachable drive that the PS5 Slim uses). And if you also need a vertical stand, that isn’t included either, pushing the actual price past $800."
