Really surprised there wasn't an existing "News and Discussion" thread for this movie. This old news blog article (from the closed "News Comment" forum) is the closest I could find. I spruced that up and now we have a talkback thread.

......Ready for the trailer? Okay, here it is:

From the front page of AnimeSuperhero.com:

"The Minecraft Movie Teaser Is Out, And…Yikes"

"Should I be more worried about what Warner Bros. chooses to lock in their vault, or what they choose to let out? The first teaser for A Minecraft Movie showed up online this morning, and the general public consensus seems to be “get it away from me.”

It’s not going over well. Instead of animating Minecraft, which would work the best, WB chose to “live-action” the whole thing by generating photorealistic representations of the overworld and greenscreening real people into them. Of all the things that don’t work when they’re made “real,” the blocky pixelated land of Minecraft really, really seems to not work. I mean, just look at this:

Nice to know that this and that Borderlands prove that bad video game movie adaptations are still alive and well in the modern day.

(If this post ages poorly and the movie’s actually good, you have every right to laugh at me for it)

Also…why is it titled A Minecraft Movie? That title sounds like a fan film or A Goofy Movie lol (the sequel better be called An Extremely Minecraft Movie).

Oh wow. I waited until after work to watch this, and I'm wondering if I should have just kept waiting for eternity.

I'm relieved to see that others share the same opinion as me. I could feel the disappointment enter my body with each second that passed. This is definitely not the Minecrafy movie I envisioned back in 2018 or whenever it was first announced. I was hoping it'd be a better version of Minecraft Story Mode. But instead, it's a poor man's version of Jumanji or Pixels.

I do love seeing Jack Black as Steve, and I'm sure he'll bring a nice performance to the table. But everything else about this looks...rough. Honestly not sure if I would see this in theaters or even watch it on demand.

Also they were so close to releasing this film on April 1.

I will admit that I have never played Minecraft, but this looks like it will disappoint me if I was a fan. A fully animated movie would be so much better.

The trailer has gone over like a lead balloon.

Even Minecraft YouTubers are roasting it.

I wanted Trey Parker to play Steve given the character's resemblance to Randy Marsh.

I'll be honest, this doesn't strike me as especially egregious. Yes it's garish, yes it uses an old song to questionable effect, yes the dialogue is bland, yes it seems to be crushing any individuality out of an idiosyncratic indie director who has been chosen for this for no obvious reason, yes it seems like a desperate attempt to ring a hit out of a known property that may perhaps have no real place on the movie screen...well, sorry to be a boring old man, but that's all pretty much what I expect from a big budget Hollywood movie in 2024.

I'll grant that I know little to nothing about Minecraft, but I don't think the reactions have been limited to fans of the games.

I do wonder how much longer Jack Black's second (third?) wind can last though. I'm old enough to remember when people got tired of his schtick the first time. And it's not like he's changed it up.

It's a shame what has happened to the Internet Archive. Tons of lost media and pieces of history might be gone forever if the site isn't back up.
