Metamorphosis: Damn, had a feeling they'd cripple Todo somehow with the way this arc was going but at least he had the last laugh twice. Todo seems to be sure his Boogie Woogie is done for, but gotta wonder if a prosthetic hand could allow him to keep using it. Todo's too entertaining of a character to leave on the sidelines, imo.

Felt cathartic to see Mahito, even in his evolved state, utterly beaten and running scared like a wounded loser. But ah, man, he was absent for too many episodes -- Fake Geto. Definitely going to be a bitter ending. Really wanted to see Itadori get rid of Mahito but I guess it's gonna be Fake Geto pulling a Vegeta on his Nappa.

There is one thing this series does that its ancestor series Bleach very rarely did and that was kill off characters. The big controversy is over who was picked to be the tragic death. I was under the impression that Yuji, Megumi, and Nobara were the power trio. With Nobara being the most prominent female character in the series, and her being killed just to give Yuji even more angst, a lot of people find this to be a sexist writing decision. I think Black Clover has this series beat in terms of how it treats female characters. Also, Nanami's death stung because he was the closest thing to an audience surrogate for adult audience members, and now it looks we are stuck with an almost all teen cast except for the kidnapped Gojo. We have what looks like a nihilistically bleak arc with lots of suffering and it seems like it is really controversial online. I do question the writing decisions, but the action scenes are rivaled only by Chainsaw Man and Demon Slayer and Yuji is a likable protagonist and I'm hoping we see him just kill Mahito already.

Episode 45 "Metamorphosis, Part 2" -December 20, 2023
The moment it appeared Itadori and Mahito's battle to the death was resolved, the being wearing Geto's body asked, "Shall I save you, Mahito?" Itadori immediately recognizes the man before him as the very same one who sealed away Gojo and leaps to attack.

Metamorphosis, Part 2: Ooh, boy. Don't like what Kusakabe's words are foreshadowing. Without Gojo's protection and what happened to Shibuya, that's right. There's no one to really stop Itadori from being executed anymore.

Mei Mei and Ui Ui bailed. Figures. Then indulges in insider trading basically. That scene... the less that's said about it the better. But after this, Mei Mei is not a character to be trusted, imo.

Oh no, Uzumaki from the movie. Everyone left swoops in for the save. Phew. Would have been the worst if Miwa got killed off, too. But damn, Uraume ain't no lightweight with her ice techniques and even used a Reverse Curse to instantly heal her wound. But then Mahito's gone but since Uzumaki was used, then Fake Geto must have taken Idle Transfiguration, too. Though as the Choso vs. Fake Geto fight showed, the latter knows how to fight.

Hmm, so Fake Geto is probably way older than 150 years moving from sorcerer to sorcerer. Great, another anime where the big bad is an ancient OP historical figure. He could have even been around when Sukuna was peak. Sounds like with Choso he was experimenting with making a super vessel for himself. What a twist at the time he was in possession of a Kamo. Plus, Fake Geto did briefly say he did a fine job making Sukuna's vessel. Does that mean Itadori's mom was manipulated the same way as Choso's and that's why Choso started to see him as a brother? Then Itadori might be the product of Death Painting Womb, too?! WUT.

Whoa. Kusakabe's New Shadow Style nerfed the Uzumaki! When he goes "I want to go home" :D :D :D

Yuki!!! Ooo, if she cleans up in an epic fight next episode -- gonna be so cool :D

Episode 46 "Shibuya Incident – Gate, Close" -December 28, 2023
Choso begins to realize the identity of the mastermind parasitizing Geto's corpse as sorcerers gather for the final moments of the Shibuya Incident. The special-grade sorcerer, Yuki Tsukumo, comes to the rescue when they're on the verge of death.

Shibuya Incident – Gate, Close : What a mess. Fake Geto wins and the chaos continues to get worse and Itadori, Gojo, and Principal Yaga get thrown under the bus by the Jujutsu elders. And a bunch of vessels like Itadori have been awakened. And tons of cursed spirits running rampant. What a mess.

So basically Fake Geto wants a revival of the Heian era, a time when Sukuna was peak and Jujutsu sorcerers wielded a lot of clout over the world.

Didn't expect Yuki to be so comical, even the animation shifts with her tone.

Wow, oh wow, of all people, Yuta is the one sent to execute Itadori. I'll call it now, I bet there will be a fake out and Yuta decides to spare Itadori. Maybe a bunch of sorcerers go rogue and separate from the Tokyo and Kyoto schools to save Gojo perhaps.

EDIT: Didn't realize at first the girl who awakens in the hospital bed is Megumi's step-sister.

And they've announced season 3 is coming and adapts the next arc Culling Game. Sounds like some Darwin survival of the fittest = lot's a battles. But based on speculation online it sounds like cour 1 will be two mini-arcs that preface it in the manga then cour 2 will be the actual Culling Game adaptation. I've heard Culling Game is Shibuya Incident x10.

The finale's dub streamed, so I finally got to know how this arc ended. This arc has been controversial because of just how much darker it's been. Except for Todo being Todo, this arc had almost none of the wacky comedy season 1 had and the theme of season 1 seemed to be that the world would be a better place if Yuji were dead. Unlike other shows where protag has a superpowered evil side that might be a minor nuisance, Sukuna basically did 9/11 level damage. There's also the issue of what the show did with Nobara and the confusing Choso being Yuji's maybe brother somehow. The show ended up on a few of Anime News Network reviewer's worst of fall 2023 lists, The Best and Worst Anime of Fall 2023. I think we are seeing the Demon Slayer effect where a show's massive popularity makes it a popular punching bag as ANN critics hate Demon Slayer seasons 2-3. This season was very flawed, but there were things to look forward to like the foreshadowed Yuji vs Yuta fight. As for my opinion, I guess it's somewhere in the middle. This season had highs and lows, it was highly imperfect, but if you are a battle shonen fan, it's definitely worth seeing for those high points like seeing Mahito get his comeuppance.

Our own "PicardMan" is back with another Anime Review!

From the front page of AnimeSuperhero.com:

"Review: “Jujutsu Kaisen”:Season 2: Grimdark Battle Shonen"

jujutsu-kaisen-3.jpg

"When Jujutsju Kaisen hit the scene in 2020, it was an instant smash, being named the Anime of the Year at Crunchyroll’s anime awards. At first glance, this title appears to be highly derivative of its predecessors, with a premise of fighting monsters and going to a school to learn magical martial arts techniques to fight said monsters. While this series owes a lot to previous battle shonen series Bleach and Blue Exorcist, the series execution allowed it be seen as more than a pale knock-off of the standard supernatural battle series.

The legendary Sunghoo Park, who directed the amazing action sequences of the 2020 anime series The God of High School, created his magnum opus with Jujutsu Kaisen season one, delivering spectacle that could be one of the very few series to rival Demon Slayer. Yuji Itadori ended up being a refreshing protagonist, feeling like believable everyday teenager with hobbies outside of fighting the monsters, being a cinephile and fun lover. Bringing the world memorable characters like Panda, who is not a panda, and Toge Inumaki, who only speaks using the names of riceball ingredients, were ironically quirky characters. Suffice it to say, season one of Jujutsu Kaisen was a must watch for fans of the supernatural battle shonen subgenre."

Anyone here enjoy their anime going extra "Grimdark"?

Well, it's officially won the Crunchyroll anime of the year for 2023, Winners Of The 2024 Anime Awards - Anime Superhero News. Chainsaw Man fans and fans of rival shonen series be salty (Chainsaw Man was elible for the 2023 awards despite airing in 2022 because fall season series are eligible for the next year. Ex fall 2024 series are counted by Crunchyroll as a 2025 series). I think there were better titles from fall 2022-summer 2023, but my inner teenage boy saw the appeal of this series and it is obvious that the teenage kids are the main target demo for the Crunchyroll Anime Awards.

Wow, between My Hero Academia, Demon Slayer and now Jujutsu Kaisen, the three current top Shonen Jump properties are coming to an end.

With the one season every 2-3 years approach, are we sure that the anime adaptions will finish before 2030? Well, at least My Hero Academia goes by an annual release so it should be over in 2025. Who knows when Jujutsu Kaisen season 3 will actually come out.

Just in terms of manga I think is what Space Cadet was getting at, what big ones are left. Chainsaw Man. One Piece. JoJo.

Well, MHA anime might not be over. They could always adapt Vigilante next and/or keep making movies.

But staying topic, yeah, Jujutsu season 3...eh probably 2026/2027.

"The “Jujutsu Kaisen” Manga Just Concluded (The Last Weekly Shonen Jump Manga Series Of The 2010’s)"

IMG_0166.jpeg

Jujutsu Kaisen, one of Shonen Jump’s most popular manga, has released its final chapter on September 29. The series, which focuses on battles between sorcerers using curse energy, began its run on March 5, 2018. The manga was initially carried in the English Shonen Jump digital magazine as part of the Jump Start initiative, but it was removed after the three chapter preview. After this, the manga grew in popularity in Japan, but was not legally accessible to American audiences. Late the following year, Viz released the first graphic novel volume on December 3, 2019.

Over 2020, the series became even more popular, especially once the anime adaptation began airing in Japan on October 3, 2020. The MAPPA produced anime directed by Sunghoo Park ran 24 episodes until March 27, 2021 on MBS and TBS stations in Japan. The anime was renowned for its well animated fight scenes. A film adapting the prequel manga Jujutsu Kaisen 0 was released in 2021. A second season aired from July 6-December 28, 2023. This season was directed by Shota Goshozono.

Both seasons received popular success, with Jujutsu Kaisen becoming one of the most streamed anime on Crunchyroll. Guiness World Records awarded Jujutsu Kaisen the Award for “Most in-demand animated tv show.” The English dub of the first season was released on HBO Max on December 4, 2020. Viz Media has released the first season on Blu-Ray on two sets released on February 28, 2023 and October 31, 2023.

Jujutsu Kaisen has been one of the longest running and most successful battle manga in recent Shonen Jump history. Only last month, My Hero Academia concluded its decade long run on August 5, 2024. While Shonen Jump still has a couple of classic 90s battle manga running in One Piece and Hunter X Hunter, the most popular 2010s manga are no longer running in the Weekly Shonen Jump title."

"“Jujutsu Kaisen: The Culling Game” Finally Coming to Crunchyroll this Coming January"

yuji-fushiguro-and-yuta-culling-game-arc.avif

"The wait between Jujutsu Kaisen seasons is a long and excruciating wait, with a three year gap between season one (2020) and 2 (2023). The pattern continues as season three will stream on Crunchyroll in January 2026, three years after the end of season two.

Now granted, the three year gap has allowed for the series to have some of the most elaborately staged fights ever seen in anime, with Demon Slayer being the series only rival. Based on this trailer, it looks like season three will have some eye candy worth devouring."

"“Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution” Gets Special One-Day Only IMAX Screening on December 5th"

Jujutsu-Kaisen-Execution-Screenshot-1.jpg

"On December 5, we will be getting a special compilation film featuring a recap of Jujutsu Kaisen season two and a special screening of the first two episodes of the upcoming Jujutsu Kaisen season three in a special compilation film entitled Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution. We have found out some news that may excite superfans of this series. On December 3, fans can see the first two episodes of season three even earlier for the special one day only IMAX screenings. This will be a very limited screening as only 100 screens in the United States will receive the IMAX release, so it’s probably best to check if the IMAX screening will be in your area. Otherwise, the regular format edition of Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution will have wider availability on December 5.

Fans are really anticipating the third season of Jujutsu Kaisen coming this January and this film will give fans early access to the first two episodes. Demon Slayer and Dan Da Dan have also received similar compilation releases giving fans early access to upcoming seasons. Like those aforementioned releases, this release will include both subtitled and dubbed screenings."
