The name for AT&T/Warner's new upcoming streaming service has been released : HBO Max. It will have exclusive streaming rights to Friends , Fresh Prince of Bel-air. Some original programming and more as said by this press release. Plus will have content from the former Turner Networks, Crunchyroll etc.

They couldn't have named it something like "AT&T Max" or "Warner Bros. Max?"
HBO is a very popular brand name-wise, even though it's younger than the name Warner Bros.

To me, the name Warner Bros doesn't seem to be as popular as Disney or FOX or Universal. I'm pretty sure all people who know what Warner Bros is are the same people who know Animaniacs... (which is, of course, a large group, but still, if they are interested in the international market, HBO is just better...)

AT&T is unknown outside the USA (AFAIK) and "AT&T Max" doesn't exactly roll off the tongue...

FPBA was originally produced by NBC I wonder why NBCUniversal hasn't reclaimed distribution rights to it.

HBOmax would be the perfect home for TV extensions of the Pokemon Cinematic Universe as established in Detective Pikachu.

The quick promo they put together reinforces how much content they have at their disposal from so many different brands:

Also, given how they're co-opting the "Max" name and calling their projects "Max Originals", it makes me think that Cinemax's days are numbered. After all, their non-porn original programming of the last few years hasn't been setting the world on fire, and having just movies is a hard sell now. Maybe if they could turn Cinemax into a counterculture flavored TCM (somewhat akin to their 80s origins and their Adult Swim-style look in the late 2000s) they might keep it around.

At least it's not HBO Plus. Guessing AT&T wants to go off their most popular brand (sorry TBS), I kind of was thinking they should have called it Warner Lot harking to the Warner Bros. movie studio thing.

I'll be curious to see what the original content on this service is like, especially when it comes to their animated offerings.

HBO Plus was what they renamed HBO 2 as from 1998 to 2002 (when they began launching HBO The Works, what they used to call the HBO Multiplex-- HBO 3 became HBO Signature). I believe HBO Plus does exist in other countries, separate from HBO 2.

I have a plan for HBO Max. I have an idea for an animated Sonic the Hedgehog series, in collaboration between WB Animation, Sega and Frederator Studios, with Greg Weisman and Tyson Hesse will be developing it, Fred Seibert and Sam Register as executive producers and people like Victor Cook, Spike Brand and Tony Cervone directing the episodes. It will be a serialized animated series and with individual story arcs comprising each season. the animation will be provided by Powerhouse Animation Studios, same animation studio who made Castlevania. At first, I was thinking of having it as a project for Netflix, but change the mind now that AT&T is planning a streaming service with all the WarnerMedia content.

In addition to it, I was thinking of bringing Sonic X to HBO Max.

That is a terrible name and an even worse logo. Like LinusFan said, it really should've been called something like Warner Lot (and Disney+ should've been Disney Vault).

HBO is very firmly associated with prestige programming for mature audiences. And I recognize that a brand can and often should evolve over the course of time (i.e. Netflix's evolution from being primarily a DVD-by-mail service to the #1 streaming platform) but these evolutions should still preserve the philosophical essence of the brand. And "prestige" is very much HBO's essence. I actually think this will erode HBO's reputation much more than it will help sell subscriptions of this (which already sells itself on the strength of it's wide-appeal exclusives and production deals).

Also... is this seriously going to be $16-$17 a month whereas Disney+ will be $6.99 with a comparable breadth of all-ages content and brand portfolios?

Quincy Jones had a production company that Warner Bros. had a stake in along with distribution rights to the show while NBCU owns the trademark and copyright.

Not even one CN original in the trailer :(

The logo looks like the logo of some new disgusting caffeinated drink like Monster or Nalu.

HBO's originals are its bread and butter but they do show a lot of other content and using HBO does make sense given it's an even stronger than the Warner brand.

$16-17 isn't bad considering HBO Now on its own is $14 a month, not to mention Disney also own Hulu which will be home to the more mature shows so essentially HBO Max is offering everything under one roof for the same price as Disney+ and Hulu ad-free combined.

DC Universe is what I wonder about because I think WarnerMedia may keep it as a comic book subscription service with a smattering of original content but the DC films, TV and DCU originals move to HBO Max.
