PLEASE READ ALL OF THE BELOW BEFORE POSTING!

To review the primaries, click the link below (The primary thread lasted from November 2007 through June 2008):
http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=201262

We now move onwards to the beginning of the end...

With news of Senator Clinton's (D-NY) [Editors Note: Hillary has two Ls...] resignation from the Presidential election we now enter the next phase of the election. We are now Democrats versus Republicans with the Independents in the middle. It is now Barack Obama (D-IL) versus John McCain (R-AZ). With this new thread I will point ask everyone to do just one thing: RESPECT EACH OTHER. I made a new thread just to point that out. Now that the infighting is over, the parties are going to go at each other. I don't want to see pointless bashing (especially if it's misinformed). I will allow discussion of issues, but please, don't get too wrapped up into it. Don't get tense, enjoy the discussion. If you are getting frustrated, just leave, or PM me reporting that a person is being disrespectful. If that is the case I will temporarily or permanently close this thread. You will get NO public warnings. If you are disrespectful, I will close the thread (temporarily or permanently) or react accordingly (poke or warn).

If you noticed, I deleted one of the rules present in the original thread (Rule 3), I will allow discussion of all political issues. Just make sure you do the following:
  • Respect your fellow members
  • Keep it at least somewhat related to the election
  • Don't bash pointlessly
  • Don't try and convince, just state your opinion if necessary, but be courteous
RULES
1) Do NOT start ideological debates. This means that that if someone differs on a certain subject with you, you cannot respond with a retort on their ideology. They believe what they want, and you probably won't be able to change their minds either way. If there is a back and forth on this I will give ONE warning to the thread and otherwise, you will GET a warning and this thread will be closed.

2) Do NOT go off on ideological RANTS. This means you can't just preach about, let's say, abortion, and how terrible it may be or how we need it. You can make a quick point like "I believe this," and have maybe a sentence or two max to back it up, but that's IT. Do not go crazy and spout your beliefs here. That's not what this thread is for or about. You will be warned if you do this, right away.

3) Please keep things CIVIL. I don't want to have to warn people AT ALL, it's not what I like to do, but if you break a rule, or get nasty, I will do it. Be nice, polite, and follow the general Toon Zone rules.

With that out of the way, discuss away. Talk about your favorite candidates, the election and how it will effect the country, who you think is going to win. Why you like or dislike certain candidates (you can argue politely about this), and so on. This thread is mainly to raise political awareness and to get all of you over 18 to the polls! Enjoy, but keep things under control.

And so VP speculation begins, I suppose...personally, I hope McCain's town hall debate idea works out. It'd sure be different, an unusual arrangement for a campaign somewhat more unusual than others.

I'm remaining undecided on the poll until it's decided (the VP slots for both candidates)

Well here are some VP possibilities, (they've been talked about, they're not really my calls...I personally don't like a lot of them) tell me what you guys think:

For Barack Obama:
Hillary Clinton (Senator, NY)
Wesley Clark (Fmr. Supr. Cmdr, NATO)
Sam Nunn (Fmr. Senator, GA)
Ted Strickland (Governor, OH)
Kathleen Sebelius (Governor, KS)
Jim Webb (Senator, VA)
Mike Easley (Governor, NC)
Chuck Hagel (Republican Senator, NE)
Bill Richardson (Governor, NM)
Ed Rendell (Governor, PA)
John Edwards (Fmr. Senator, NC)
Michael Bloomberg (Mayor, NYC)
Evan Bayh (Senator, IN)

For John McCain:
Bobby Jindal (Governor, LA)
Mitt Romney (Fmr. Governor, MA)
Charlie Crist (Governor, FL)
Mike Huckabee (Fmr. Governor, AR)
Condeleezza Rice (Sec. of State)
Tim Pawlenty (Governor of Minnesota)
Joseph Lieberman (Independent Democratic Senator, CT)
Carly Fiorina (Fmr. HP CEO)
Mark Sanford (Governor, SC)
Rob Portman (Fmr. Congressman, OH)

Okay, now that those primaries are out of the way, I can safely say that Hilary will be aching for the VP spot.

as i have for the past three elections, i am abstaining from voting. if i do end up voting this year, it'll be a write in vote because i still think stewart/colbert is exactly what this country needs

Obama is my choice

The fact that Obama get most of his money from small donations, and has the least to do with lobbyists is one of the main thing. Maybe he might actually deliver on the whole change issue. Then again I am also young and naive. Time will tell.

I thik McCain should choose Guliani for his VP. Obama choosing Clinton for his VP would be a huge mistake in my opinion.

I'm on the fence on who I want to vote for. Normally I vote Republican, but with my diappointment with the direction this country is heading, I'm willing to consider voting for Obama to see someone new and fresh in the White House and give him a chance to see what he can do.

I was thinking similarly, though I may run as a write-in...

BTW: How do you guys think the poll in this thread will look by November? (It stands at 9 to 5)

I think Obama will end up being the winner. A lot of Americans are dissatisfied with the direction this country is heading and the Republicans in general.

I too think Obama will win, but it won't be an easy victory, MC Cain will give a good fight but it won't be enough.

Though I can't find anything I like about either candidate right now, so as it currently stands I will be staying away.

I think Senator Obama has to address these issues if he wants to win:

1) He should NOT offer the running mate spot to Senator Clinton. I don't think he wants to put up with the massive political baggage Senator Clinton has.

2) He needs to once and for all firmly address the issues of the remarks made by the religious people he knew personally.

3) He needs to cater to as many moderate Americans as possible.

The easiest way for Obama to win is to play up the "misery index" like Regan did all those years ago. Lay into what eight years of Bush has done and paint McCain as a third term for Bush. Appeal to moderates, deal with the religious issues, etc, etc. What the campaign doesn't need is its own baggage.

Hillary's a double-edged sword. She brings appeal, but at the same time an immense amount of baggage as well.

I say McCain will win, but only by a margin that would be enough to prevent another Democrat demanding a recount. Obama was the wrong choice for the Dems to use to take back the White House. Sure Obama has that the support of the youth vote, black vote, and the media. So did John Kerry and look what happened to him. That's why I believe that Obama lost, they was a huge media frezny in 2004 to get Bush out of office. All McCain has to do is drum up the Republican base. Of course his message would "It's either me or Senator Obama." And since the change that Obama is promising is just Socialism, they will have to settle with McCain.

Its probably going to be pretty close but I'm pretty sure the fact John McCain has really no platform and no plan to solve any of the problems caused by the perpetual stupidity of the Bush Administration, except, of course, to keep breaking it until it fixes itself, will eventually do himself in.

Also I fail to see how white women over the age of 50 would be so hellbent to basically undo everything they tried to achieve in the late 60's-early 70's over sour grapes. Clinton, NOT Obama, needs to address this since there is a sense that deep down despite all the horrible things she did in order to try to win the nomination, she is the last person who wants to see McSame continue our descent to the bottom of the barrel.

I like and admire both Barack Obama and John McCain. That being said, I'm leaning towards McCain. I've been following his career since 2000, and honestly, if he won the Republican nomination that year, I think he'd have won the election and we'd be living in a very different world today. But, nope, he lost because George Bush said he had a black baby.

This isn't a case where I'm voting for the lesser of two evils. For once there is a race between two guys that I actually like. I'd be okay with an Obama presidency. I think both are honorable man. Well, as honorable as any politicians can get. Everything is relative.

But, more than that, I'm glad McCain is the nominee, if he wins, the Republican Party will move to a more moderate stance. Especially on social issues, which is something we need. The Neo-Cons and the Bible Thumpers have no place in our government.

As for who they should pick for their VPs.

Obama should pick Wesley Clark, I think. Clark would help him with his cred on National Defense. An area he's actually weak on.

McCain, well, I think Giuliani would be the best possible choice. I'm not expecting it though.

Well, as I expressed in the Primaries thread, I am supporting Barack Obama, and I hope he wins because I really believe he could bring some change for the better, and I disagree with John McCain a lot more. Also, it would be nice seeing history made if we get the very first African American President. As for running mates, I'd prefer if Obama decided to pick John Edwards. I like Edwards as a polician, he and Obama seem to get along very well, and he could help Obama get those blue collar votes he lacks. However, Hillary could potentially help stop her supporters from going to McCain if she is Obama's running mate, but I'm not sure if I'd be particularly confortable having her as Vice President, and you never know, it could actually backfire Obama's chances of winning. I'd still vote for Obama if she was his running mate, though. As for McCain's running mate, I too would like to see Rudy Guiliani get the spot, but I see Mitt Romney possibly being picked instead.

Daily Statistics, by Zach, 6/5/08:

Toon Zone:
Barack Obama - 57.14%
John McCain - 28.57%

RCP Polls:
Barack Obama - 46.7%
John McCain - 44.5%

Electoral-Vote:
Barack Obama - 287
John McCain - 227

Toon Zone seems to favor Barack Obama more than the rest of the nation. The trends haven't really changed in the past couple of days, but over the last week or so, Obama has trended up (but are still over 50 lower than what Clinton was showing).

I wish he would select Chuck Hagel. He’s one of the most adamant Republicans against the war and a bipartisan ticket would really drive home Barack Obama’s message of change. Sure, the two of them may not see eye-to-eye on every single issue, but I believe that they could work together in order to fix this country.

Its not out of the question, in fact Hagel has gone on record of saying he would gladly except the VP position from Obama.

If I could vote, I'd vote for Obama. McCain's fine on most issues, but the war issue is leading me to side with the Democrats as I usually do.

Just wondering, can Colbert possibly become Vice President? That would be awesome.
