So far Weasel and Nina seem to be the least characters. The show would probably be unwatchable without them. Now, what if we learn Nina did something super messed up in her flashback? That is a totally predictable twist I'm anticipating the seemingly most moral of the group is actually the most depraved. Let's see what they have planned for Nina's backstory, but if they go that direction, we are reaching peak edgelord cartoon.
Judging by the next episode preview I'm wondering if she basically abandoned her humanity and became a fish monster and her first targets were the people who bullied her?

Though it would be kind of funny if the only reason she's in Argus custody is because she was arrested for indecent exposure as a naked fish woman :p.

This time the Penguin isn't Oswald or Oz, he's just "O" :p.

Reminds me of when I had a comic shop/bookstore in Cupertino, CA - just down the road from NASA. Two of my regulars, a pair of married (to each other) customers worked there at the Moffit Field office, and told me that they worked on Space Station Freedom. The team of engineers unofficially removed a letter from the name every time there were stupid, short-sighted budget cuts.

"We're down to 'Space Station Fred'" said one.

"Could be worse. By the end of the year we're probably be working on 'Space Station Ed'" commented the other.

"What Creature Commandos Tells Us About The Gunnverse"

8xstch13.jpg

"As many many websites have reported, yes, Batman made an appearance in last week’s episode of Creature Commandos. This is significant because Creature Commandos is the very first piece of media from the Gunnverse (what we’ve all decided to call James Gunn’s new DC Cinematic Universe) and this would make the first appearance of a character that is inevitably going to get his own live-action movie.

But.

The thing about this Batman appearance is that it’s rather small in comparison to other first-time appearances that have happened on Creature Commandos thus far. It’s literally small too — the screenshot above is about it, a momentary image that displays for one second. It’s a silhouette of Batman that doesn’t contain much detail, and you can’t gather much from it. According to Gunn, this was by design.

“When they first showed the episode to me, there was a lot more Batman,” Gunn reportedly said in an interview with Rotten Tomatoes. “And I said, “I’m not ready to commit to that…more silhouette!” This means he’s probably still deciding who his Batman even is."

Honestly I thought Nina was just a mutated fish but she actually is human and was just mutated by her father into a fish woman. Meaning she also does not fit the criteria that Task Force M abides by, but who cares at this point .

Who is the better parent? The mom who thinks the child would be better off dead than having to live with an unconventional and frankly uncomfortable method of living or the dad who will go to any length to make sure his daughter survives even if it means turning her into a science experiment? Though no one can doubt that Nina's father genuinely loved her up to his death :crying:.

Of course even with assassins out to kill her Ilana will still take the time to go on her morning swim in her very lavish pool because it's the only time Nina can actually do something with the team and we needed an excuse to show the princess in a tight one-piece swimsuit :rolleyes2:.

I'm so glad this show included Frankenstein so they could turn him into an obsessive stalker creep who kills innocent people and whose only real contribution to the plot is stopping Clayface (which didn't even really amount to much) and getting coldly shot by the Bride and left for dead. Such a great use of the character. And I'm also glad that Rick Flag Sr.'s big contribution was getting seduced by the princess and made to basically screw everyone over while he gets the life beat out of him by Clayface. This really makes the character SO compelling and make me want to see even more of him .

(Frank Grillo, David Harbour, and Anya Chalotra feel wasted in this).

Just to remind you the Creature Commandos aren't really good people, they don't care about the morality of their actions. One more dead human is all the better in their mind! Reject humanity! Embrace monster! Kill people in cold blood! What kind of pep talk is this o_O?

It's always hard transitioning a homeschooled kid to school with other kids...especially when you're a fish girl who is easily bullied and doesn't fit in. Is it any wonder Nina wanted to get away from everything, even if she treasured her father ?

When they mentioned Star City I thought for sure we would get a Green Arrow cameo...though maybe it's for the best he didn't get involved in the Nina situation .

So the big reveal of how Nina ended up in Belle Reve...she literally did nothing. She hunted fish, she spooked some people , and animal control collected her like an animal. I mean, it was clear she'd never kill anyone or really commit a crime, but it was also kind of basic .

I know police often act over-zealously and there's probably truth to situations like this happening (how often do we hear about police shooting unarmed civilians?) and we saw that with Weasel...but seriously, why would they pull out guns to shoot a man in the back who wasn't wielding a weapon and just trying to force himself away? Could they not have just tased him? Or had someone pull him off? He wasn't really a threat or someone worth pulling out a gun over. I guess James Gunn really doesn't like the police considering they were the problem in two of the teams' backstories .

They never should have sent Nina out there or tried to make her into someone she wasn't...and it got her killed. They killed like one of the only actual likeable characters in the show. Honestly my interest kind of died after that :(.

Okay, so I guess Ilana is actually evil then. No explanation of her motives, her plans, what she was going to do with Grodd, what she was even doing in general, or why they had to make a straightforward plot more convoluted than it needed to be. Honestly I'm kind of underwhelmed and felt like they chose the least interesting direction for the story. Oh, but hey, look how awesome The Bride is :knd1:.

They just shot the princess in the head...in a castle full of knights...and just stroll out of there? Seriously? Oh, and they randomly bully some guy from an American embassy I think. Look how edgy and hardcore this team is :quinn:.

Well, the Creature Commandos have got a new wing and some new members... Aten(?), Mecha G.I. Robot (who will never be seen by Friend Nina again), Nosferata, and King Shark (voiced by Diedrich Bader because there was no way they were going to get Sylvester Stallone back). Because you can never have enough King Shark. Honestly I just can't find myself caring all that much :raven:.

I guess the Bride is the better leader of the Creature Commandos because she doesn't give a hoot about humans or killing people and is just doing it to kill time at this point...but I can't say I'm any more interested in her character. Where's Matthew Shrieve when you need him :ack:.

Heartbreaking.

Wonder what Pokolistan's next move is. Ilana's dead. Her mom is catatonic. Civil war? Another country invades and annexes it? We saw in the Superman trailer there's a bit of that unrest going on around the same area of Jarhanpur and Boravia. Is that gonna be the connection to Superman besides Rick? Hmm.

Waller got outed by Leota for Task Force X. I doubt anyone left in Pokolistan has the pull to out Waller for Task Force M. But there's still Elizabeth Bates.

One thing that I wonder though. I'm sure Waller had a team collect Clayface. Usually Clayface recovers from electricity in other depictions. Will he in this case? Will Belle Reve scientists try to revive him? Use his remains to turn another person into Clayface? With the live action movie in the works, hmm.

Mmm, I'd like to see if anyone liked this depiction of Eric Frankenstein. Rick, on the other hand, I think his by-the-book boy scout stance will come into play in Superman and challenged in Peacemaker once he find out the truth of his son.

So the big reveal of how Nina ended up in Belle Reve...she literally did nothing. She hunted fish, she spooked some people , and animal control collected her like an animal. I mean, it was clear she'd never kill anyone or really commit a crime, but it was also kind of basic.
Yeah, arrested because of hysteria. Figured as much.

I guess James Gunn really doesn't like the police considering they were the problem in two of the teams' backstories .
That's what I got from it, too. As well as by the book feds get the short end of the stick, like Rick. But it's really the zeitgeist right now, I don't really fault it on Gunn having an agenda.

It was heartbreaking. But Bride figured it all out and got revenge. When she said it was because she killed her only friend. Oh, man. Idk, that got me a little choked up as well as her walking away with tears and even Phosphorus figured out what happened and consoled her. The score was well done in those scenes.

It's laid out there. She told Rick she loved American rock and roll. Wanted to take her country into the 21st century. Look at the books Bride sees in her study. She basically studied the West and got radicalized. A very simplistic comparison is ancient Japan revered China then when Japan opened to the West in the 19th century and modernized, they tried to conquer China by WW2 along with the rest of Asia and create this prosperous Asian empire. This was basically Pokolistan. Well, Ilana specifically. She revered and idolized America then started studying it and the West. We could see the start of modernizing with the Amethyst Knights, even down to the airport, the humvees, the soldiers contrast that all with the village setting and castle. Then in her study there was the holographic globe. And the vision, she's got an air force raining bombs on the US.

When it comes to Grodd. Well she was able to operate in channels that led her to hiring Clayface. Not much of stretch she would seek out Grodd as a general. In past interviews, Gunn has said there's a lot of metahumans out in the world to the point of it being a problem. So I think we're at a point where superpowered villains are also at the point they are mercs for hire on the international scene. Though curiously, Mathilda was a nice parallel to Victor and Bride but another of the books was Jacques le fataliste, which was basically the relationship between valet Jacques and his master, who is never named. And who's never named? Grodd. We've seen like in Batman Beyond that Xander was tutored by Cuvier. What if Grodd is/was a mentor of Ilana... (while Don Quixote and Wuthering Heights seem to point at Eric)

Gunn confirmed in the Rotten Tomatoes video that's Khalis. He had a cameo in two episodes this season.

I want to say it was Flashpoint that there was giant mecha G.I. Robot. But silver, not all bronze/gold.

In retrospect, it was kinda odd we didn't see King Shark cameo among the inmates this season.

Where's Matthew Shrieve when you need him :ack:.
Yeah, I'm curious where Shrieve, Velcoro, and Warren are. I think in interviews, either Gunn or Lorey experienced interest in Medusa if they get renewed.

Maybe they'll get taken over by a Supervillain (Queen Bee in Bialya?). Maybe they'll come after the Creature Commandos for revenge...
Waller got outed by Leota for Task Force X. I doubt anyone left in Pokolistan has the pull to out Waller for Task Force M. But there's still Elizabeth Bates.
I'm still amazed they got out of the castle intact. It's not like they were being stealthy at all .

Honestly I was wondering the whole time if he actually surived.

I don't mind him being a boy scout, but the fact that his big contribution to the plot was having sex with the princess so he can end up messing up the entire mission just makes him come off like a joke .
Yeah, arrested because of hysteria. Figured as much.
I guess the lesson of the episode - don't go skinny dipping, you'll get your dad shot :ack:.
That's what I got from it, too. As well as by the book feds get the short end of the stick, like Rick. But it's really the zeitgeist right now, I don't really fault it on Gunn having an agenda.
I think it was a bit much here because A. we already saw it happen with Weasel and B. this was even more excessive and unnecessary. Like, I can buy the police freaking out about a giant Weasel man with a girl in his mouth and using excessive force but Nina's dad?

It just felt like we needed to tack on more tragedy and death for the sake of it because it had been in every cast members' backstory by this point.
It was heartbreaking. But Bride figured it all out and got revenge. When she said it was because she killed her only friend. Oh, man. Idk, that got me a little choked up as well as her walking away with tears and even Phosphorus figured out what happened and consoled her. The score was well done in those scenes.
I feel for the Bride's care for Nina. I just wish I cared about the Bride as a character. I can't help but feel like some of the other characters suffered for the sake of developing her story as the ostensible lead.

I just don't think it was presented consistently or clear enough by the time we got to the reveal scene, especially when the logic behind her using Clayface to try to cover for herself completely falls apart the more you think about it (so was Clayface not supposed to kill Flag, literally the only person who was supposed to corroborate that Ilana was being "framed?" How did she even know Circe would reveal her complicity at all to the point that she needed to replace someone who would corroborate said story? The timing of it all being so convenient when the Commandos were just about to kill her...). They also just did not do enough to present her full character to the audience, in my opinion.

Honestly I think it would've been a better story if it was the Commandos' own efforts that screwed them over rather than a tacked on villain reveal that just didn't feel earned. It's like "well, we need the princess to be the villain so the Bride can kill the "Big Baddie."
Gunn confirmed in the Rotten Tomatoes video that's Khalis. He had a cameo in two episodes this season.
Funnily enough in the comics he actually brought Nina back to life I think.
In retrospect, it was kinda odd we didn't see King Shark cameo among the inmates this season.
Honestly he makes more sense in Task Force M than all the other Task Force M members sans Bride do. Unless they reveal in season 2 that he too was charged as a human and does not actually fit the criteria Waller listed :p.

(Oh man, we're going to have to get backstory episodes for the new members too...)

All these flashbacks showed how the Creature Commandos were turned into/abused/used as monsters against their will and they are who they are because of it. Note only the ones who look like monsters got flashbacks, well except Clayface. Craic Brothers were monsters, but like Ilana they looked like regular humans - so no flashback. Ilana was a monster because of her privilege. Raised as royalty, way ahead of the average person in her country, access to more, is about to take the highest level of power - and what did she want to do with all that? Light a match and watch the world burn down. Basically the overarching theme was perception.

Ilana's ad hoc plan was to hire a shapeshifter to discredit MacPherson and create doubt about the consult (that was in fact the real MacPherson who consulted for Waller). Circe having tried to kill her, whatever Rick told her before he left Pokolistan and Sergei's intel about seeing MacPherson at Belle Reve was enough for Ilana to connect the dots that Waller would believe Circe and send the Commandos to kill her before she caused World War III. Was it a mistake to hire Clayface specifically? Yes. It was an act of desperation done without much contemplation. Once Rick knew it was Clayface, he told Eric Clayface was a "dangerous shapeshifter." In the interview that revealed the role, Tudyk called him a psychopath. Clayface likely wasn't ordered to kill anyone - just act out of character until it was noticed by Waller and co. but he's a psychotic murderer and couldn't help himself. He was probably bored with the gig and wanted to kill someone real badly then the opportunity presented itself. Clayface didn't makes waves fast enough vs. how quickly Waller deployed the Commandos so yes, Ilana's plan worked even it came down to the wire but then it got complicated all because she was nice to Weasel once which then came back to haunt the rest of the team and got Nina killed. Should they have held Weasel down or knocked him out after Nina had to restrain him not once but twice? Yeah. Did Ilana have to kill Nina? Nope. She disarmed Nina. Could have swam up to the surface and called for help. But no, instead she showed her true colors in another moment of impulse. So because Nina got killed, Bride got to thinking and realized the truth and Ilana got killed.

Is this the finale of season 1? It sure feels like it, they really saved all the big showstopping moments for this one, and it ends on a "the adventure continues" moment.

Ironically in a show that kept giving out backstory after backstory to its main cast it didn't provide one for the ostensible "main villain" that could have really added to the paper-thin plot.

Though honestly in the interest of self-defense I think Ilana could be perceived as being pretty justified against someone who was basically an assassin trying to kill her. It was only really bad because we cared about Nina and Ilana turned out to be bad afterwards.

On one hand, I'm willing to give it a pass because season 2 might delve further into it since you have to wonder did preemptively killing Ilana change the timeline enough that Grodd is no longer a factor with Pokolistan (or does he now involved with a different near-apocalypse event now) or is he still a problem. On the other hand, as I've said in the past, this basically the same formula Gunn used for TSS and PM S1 so I was kinda not expecting a big set piece after Starro, butterfly aliens, and the cow.

But it took some adjusting with how serial Suicide Squad Isekai and Creature Commandos were (I mean overall, all the recent shows have been serial rather than stand alone episodes) vs. what I was used to in reading the source material way back (new mission each issue). The hook of these comics, being espionage, were things being revealed out of order leading to a big twist in the end. So it's gotta be a stunner. The way they left it with Bride sharing what she deduced but no big battle or big admission left a lot to be desired for many I would guess. You can screen grab the document she was signing and upload it to Google Translate but unfortunately there's nothing seemingly suspicious.

Sure. Though that cold stare Ilana gave. She wasn't doing it in self-defense. But overall it was a series of ill-timed occurrences culminating at the same time.

I know we're getting a season 2 but I feel like we still need to look at season 1 from a standalone perspective and Gunn could possibly have polished the script/story more. I at least hope season 2 is an improvement.

It's funny that SS Isekai and CC are kind of the opposite in terms of execution. SS didn't dive into any characters' backstory other than Harley and focused more on the team dynamic while CC just spent 60% of its content on every characters' backstory and barely featured them as a team. And the villains aren't really explored all that much (though the final fight in SS Isekai was more exciting in my opinion).

Though I feel like SS handled it's Rick Flag better than CC.

To me that was the look of someone attacking an enemy and someone trying to kill them (which, to be fair, Nina basically was). We saw that she seemed to calm down and realized what she did afterwards so it came off more like combat instincts kicking in to me.

Aquaman clearly exists in this universe (as shown by Waller's flashback), wouldn't Atlantis be common knowledge? Why wouldn't Nina be living there?

Was Aquaman in the vision? I didn't see him...
Some fans claimed to have seen him in the vision but it's moot.

But we got Fisherman in Belle Reve so... plus with the question how what % of TSS and PM S1 are canon plus with a bunch of superheroes already established, it's possible Aquaman is already operating.

I doubt Atlantis is at a point where it allows outsiders to relocate there. Plus, Nina just wanted to be on her own but still close to home like any teen.

Thinking back, I wouldn't be shocked if Ilana were responsible for her mother's catatonic condition. i.e. poisoned her without being caught. The queen survived but remained stuck in that state.

This was an average action cartoon. Basically Suicide Squad with nonhuman characters. Nothing really groundbreaking, but nothing really offensive. X-Men 97 and Invincible were still way better shows. I'd probably place it in the same "okay" pile as Batman: Caped Crusader.
