So I broke down and bought a new laptop computer (my first new personal computer in a decade).

What virus protection software should I be using now in 2019? I had some free virus software on my old desktop computer, but that was out of date and that computer is now riddled with spyware and crap. I don't want to start off my new computer on the wrong foot (so to speak). Do I buy some virus protection software or are there still free stuff available online?

Any suggestions?

I am happy with Norton, but I don't know if it is better than other paid virus scanners.

I wouldn't use a free one or Windows Defender. Some of those free scanners ask you to pay once a virus is detected, others don't detect many viruses.
