Well, at long last, the hot new shonen series on the block that many feared would never grace Toonami's doorstep has finally made it to everyone's favorite anime lineup. And as excited as I am to see it on the lineup (and actually watch the darn anime for the first time), I still maintain that this show probably could have done well and gotten better exposure as a daytime series. But, unfortunately, unless you're Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh or a knockoff thereof, there just doesn't seem to be a place for anime on daytime TV anymore. Oh well, c'est la vie.

In any case, while I haven't seen the anime, I have read the manga, and if the anime is a faithful adaptation to the source material (and I've heard that it is) I think we're all in for quite a treat. So if fun, light-hearted, optimistic, shonen action series that pay homage to Western superhero comics is your bag, then be sure to tune in. And after Iron-Blooded Orphan's somber ending last week, I think we could all use something a bit lighter. Enjoy!

Tonight: Izuku Midoriya desperately wants to be a hero, but he is one of the few in his generation born without a Quirk. Will meeting the number one hero, All Might, change his fate?

MHA Jukebox: So yeah, this is not at all necessary, but, since I'm a huge music-lover, I figured I'd provide some musical accompaniment (in addition to the great music I'm sure we're bound to hear from this series) since there are so many songs about heroes. First up, a song you may recognize from a certain medical-based sitcom.

Previously on Iron Blooded Orphans:

...wait a minute. IBO has ended and now we're onto a new series.

So yeah, I've been hearing good things about My Hero Academia. MarioMastar has been particularly relating to one character from there too. Now me, I'm cautious, and I do note that MHA would have the sort of setup that would suggest that it may well be basic. But if it works, it works. I know I'm being ironic by being pessimistic after what I said about IBO's ending, but that just means that for me, MHA just has to avoid being disastrous.

Who knows? Maybe it will be a pleasant surprise.

I personally have been hoping for MHA to be IBO’s replacement for sometime now but truth be told I thought it would be just a hopeful fantasy. Ever since it was announced I’ve been so excited. Yes, I and likely many here have already watched it online, but it’s still exciting to see it finally get to the last bit of anime viewers in the US.

For the ten people who haven’t watched it, I’m sure you’ve heard of the praise this show has received from multiple sources over the past two years and personally I think it deserved every bit of it. You’re about to see why this show earned it’s spot, as Naruto’s successor, amongst shonen anime’s “Big 3”. Get ready for a series full of action, feels, laughs, muttering, OCD level note taking, subtle Star Wars nods, oversized red sneakers and the biggest argument over the title of ‘best girl’ in any form of media. (Real emphasis on the latter)

Go beyond! PLUS ULTRA!

The thing that makes MHA so impressive is that, for anyone who's a veteran of Shonen Jump manga/anime, you can see many tropes coming a mile away, and yet, the show still feels fresh. The author of the manga takes all these Jump tropes, but completely makes them his own and utilizes them better than many other series (Hunter x Hunter).

It's Shonen Jump at it's most polished, not to mention it's so earnest to the point where even Jump-haters can't bring themselves to dislike it.

The protagonist is just one example; he's, at first glance, an archetypal Jump lead, but written extremely well and realistically.

Premiere night! I hope people are excited. I know I am. I mentioned it before, but I've never seen the show but I am reading through the manga. I'm up through volume nine which I'm pretty sure they're adapting in season 3. So, I already know all of the stuff that's gonna happen in the early stages.

I'm curious to see what the reaction will be for people who have never seen or read anything from MHA. I actually expect some negative or at least indifferent opinions on the early stuff. I love it, but I think there might be some people here who are going to feel similar to MHA as they do Black Clover. A lot of the negativity towards Black Clover seems to stem from how basic or "shonen" it is. And honestly MHA, at least in the beginning is pretty basic. I love it because right from the first volume I connected with Deku. If you can connect with him than you'll probably be fine, but if you don't the first season might not seem all that special. When I started reading the manga I was really hyped and I was told that it was good in the beginning, but it didn't become great until the Sports Festival arc. And I would agree that it goes on a whole different level there, but that's probably not until season 2.

So, for people that are super hyped I would say just don't go in expecting to be blown away. Just sit back and enjoy the greatness of Deku. He's honestly one of my favorite protagonists of all time in any media.

My problem with Black Clover is how it will be pretentious, not basic.

Oh, so we're name-dropping this Deku fellow already? That's the guy MarioMastar mentioned relating to.

We'll find out in an hour anyway.

For new viewers, My Hero Academia is the classic children's film Sky High, except there's blood, hair-eating, and hype fights.

Okay. Now let's see if MHA lives up to the hype everybody has been displayi-

Time to see what all the fuss is about.

Oh get in a ninja garb.

(AHEM!) So will MHA be at least decent? If it lives up to the hype, it might get a positive length post. Let's see...now.

And now for the series that sets to prove Syndrome's theory wrong (when everyone's super, no one will be).

Seems even Japan had to get in on the Superhero action.

Little Deku sounds like Goten, only somehow even more annoying.

So yes, his real name is Izuku Midoriaya, bet we're gonna call him Deku just to make it confusing.

Yet another shonen series. At least it's one I've heard nothing but praise for.

And we start off with school bullies.

Another talentless superhero wannabe. Hopefully this one won't scream his head off and lust after nuns.

"All men are not created equal."

A minute in and this anime has destroyed the Declaration of Independence.

Keep an eye on the students in the opening. The show maybe Izuku’s story primarily, but as you see them bond and grow as well as find out each of their personal motivations to become pro heroes you’ll eventually be rooting for all 20 of them in their individual journeys pretty soon.... Ok well you’ll be rooting for 19 of them at least, 1 of them is pretty polarizing when it comes to appeal. (Fans know exactly who I’m referring too) Still, 19 is pretty good.

So yeah, people in this world just suddenly have superpowers and that's it. Don't ask any questions.

Backdraft. Is that a reference to the movie?

See also Tiger & Bunny and One Punch Man.

And then three wise men show up and give him gold, frankincense and myrrh.

In the beginning there were the X-Men.

Illegal use of powers during rush hour traffic? Can you go into full shark monster in public when it's not rush hour?
