All those fused Namekian warriors still couldn't stand up to just three fused Namekians (technically two, since Piccolo and Kami were originally one person).
So long U2 and U6.
Poor U2. This is more disastrous than the release of Songs of Innocence.
Okay guys, you are taking the ends of your existence way too well.
Perhaps the Namekians are not as big as the Saiya-jins, Frost, and Hit, but the fact that they absorbed many Namekians to survive does give them depth. There is a hint that Piccolo understands their desperation out of alien kinship, especially as he sees Nail and Kami-Sama. But then Kami-Sama points to the bond Piccolo already shares, and this person is not of green skin or horns...
We get an interesting phase on Ultimate Gohan here. As he saves Piccolo, he humbly apologizes. It’s a far cry from the “Fight You? I’m here to kill you!” characterization, but its’ a different one. This is a new Ultimate Gohan. Not the arrogant warrior, but a more thoughtful one, in control of his immense power instead of letting it control him like in the past. Piccolo awakes to see the boy he trained has become a man standing before him.
Love the climax. Sure, the Kamehameha isn’t as impressive as Ultra Instinct Goku vs Kefla, but it is still well-staged, the power duel between Gohan and the Namekian Sionel, the poignant shots the U2 and U6 fighters seeing their lives at risk, and Piccolo firing the Makakensoppo, helping Gohan give that final blast that blows out the Namekians and the butte. With the Universal Survivor theme kicking in. Awesome.
And so Gohan, this person whom U6 haven’t met in the initial Tournament, barely knew at the Baseball game, and probably wasn’t given much info about in the 48 hours before the Tournament, will probably be viewed as their harbinger of doom by Universe 6.
There is a poetic irony here. Universe 6 and 10 were the two realms pre-established before the Universal Survival Arc, figuring in the Champa Tournament Arc and the Trunks/Zamazu Arc. These two storylines were also notorious for Gohan fans, because they were under some embargo on the character. Toriyama was reluctant to use the character in the stories, so Toei had to find some means to keep Gohan out. He is unable to partake in the U6 Tournament because of a conference and is kept in the dark about Trunks’ predicament. And now, Gohan is the decisive factor in causing the erasure of both universes. I wonder if this was something the Toei writers were aware of.
HEY, BROTHER... SMELL YA, LATER!! I'LL BE IN RWBY!!
Another episode, another animation breakdown of this arc. For episode 118, Anime Ajay goes into the return of Masato Mitsuka and Naoki Tate since episode 110, despite the smaller staff credits.
It’s not subtle that Universe 2 is a massive Magical Girl parody, but Dragon Ball has a long history of parodying other anime and genres. Android #8 in the original Dragon Ball was a massive Frankenstein parody/homage, but before him Goku actually fought another android who was very visually based off Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Terminator series. But perhaps more famous are the Ginyu Force and Gohan’s stint as The Great Sayiaman is a parody of Sentai/Superheroes. If there’s one thing Akira Toriyama loves, it’s taking the piss out of other genres.
Universe 6 is basically “What if Dragon Ball was remade as a modern anime.” Instead of the protagonist being a fully developed from the start wild child like Goku, the closest thing to a protagonist is Cabba who is much more like characters like Deku from MHA, a character who undergoes an arc, learning to get confidence in himself. And the Namekians, instead of being friendly peaceful aliens, are full blown as “The Other,” being quiet and completely alien. And much like how modern anime tend to find one concept for powering up and run with it, U6 takes the idea of Namekian fusion and follows it through to it’s natural extreme conclusion.
The remaining fighters of the Universe 2 Team and the Universe 6 Team get some attention in tonight's episode. The episode starts by revealing that the inhabitants of Universe 2 have been watching the Tournament of Power through the Universe 2's Angel Assistant's holo-screen; the inhabitants of Universe 2 are in despair over Ribrianne/Brianne de Chateau being eliminated from the touranment. Whis thinks it's bold of the Universe 2 Team to broadcast the tournament to their universe since that would normally cause a massive panic; Brianne de Chateau encorages the inhabitants of Universe 2 to not lose hope and to cheer on the last 3 members of the Universe 2 Team.
Rabanra, Zarbuto & Zirloin fight Goku at once determined to ensure that Universe 2 will survive. Old Kai suspects that Goku is intentionally fighting without resting to test his own limits while Master Roshi acknowledges that a single mistake could lead to dire consequences. Champa smugly comments about the Universe 2 Team's losing its best fighter and Vados points out that the Universe 6 Team only has 2 fighters still participating in the tournament (one less than the Universe 2 Team); Vados also points out that the plan to be the team with the most fighters still in the arena when the time limit runs out is becoming a pipe dream, all while reminding Champa that she will be spared from the fate of Universe 6 if the Universe 6 Team is fully eliminated from the tournament. Caulifla tells the Universe 6 Namekians (Saonel & Pilina) that she will beat them up if they are eliminated from the tournament; Pilina points out that won't be possible since they will be erased from existance if they lose while Saonel says they are "fired up" and something is happening "just in time".
Tien notices that Gohan & Piccolo's fight with the Universe 6 Namekians is taking some time; Old Kai says he noticed how the Universe 6 Namekians seem to be very resilient. Gohan & Piccolo sense a change in the Universe 6 Namekians and Piccolo has a vision that shows multiple Namekian silhouettes alongside Saonel & Pilina; the Universe 6 Namekians demonstrate a greater amount of strength & speed which catches Gohan & Piccolo by surprise. The inhabitants of Universe 2 send their love to Rabanra, Zarbuto & Zirloin which leads to the trio performing the transformation sequence ritual that the Maiden Squadron/Kamikaze Fireballs performed earlier on during the tournament; Rabanra is now wearing Kakunsa's outfit, Zarbuto is now wearing Roasie's outfit and Zirloin is now wearing Ribrianne's outfit. Android 17 & Android 18 decide to join the fight to even the playing field now that the trio have transformed; the trio accuse the twins of being evil for eliminated Ribrianne from the tournament and the twins decide to play along by giving hammy introductions (much to Krillin's surprise) while Goku simply introduces himself before the 3-on-3 fight begins.
Piccolo says he has figured out that Saonel & Pilina have performed Namekian Merger before the tournament started and Pilina confirms this to be the case; Pilina further explains that Saonel & Pilina are the "representives of Universe 6's Namekians" and many other Universe 6 Namekians agreed to merge with Saonel & Pilina when they heard that the losing participating universes will be erased from existance. Saonel mentions that they avoid agressive fighting until their powered up stabilized to save this power for later on the tournament while also acknowledging that the power only stabilized when they became the last members of the Universe 6 Team still participating in the tournament; the Universe 6 Namekians say that this setback won't stop them from giving their all to save Universe 6. Gohan powers up to his Ultimate Form/"Mystic Form" and encourages Piccolo to charge a Special Beam Cannon while Gohan gets the Universe 6 Namekians' attention; Gohan figures they won't have to worry about breaking the "no killing rule" while using full power since Saonel & Pilina merging with many Namekians increased their resilience. Whis notices Beerus being quiet and suspects that this is because Gohan & Piccolo's victory means Champa being erased from existance; Beerus denies this and encourages the Universe 7 fighters facing off against the Universe 2 Team & the Universe 6 Team.
The Omni-Kings are excited about Goku and his son fighting against opponents at the same time while the Grand Minister brings up that the Universe 7 Team has persevered throughout the tournament even when other universes singled them out but also thinks that this means the stamina of the Universe 7 Team has been drained significantly; the Grand Minister also brings up how the Universe 2 Team & the Universe 6 Team have shown new sources of power with very few fighters on each team still participating in the tournament. Piccolo launches the Special Beam Cannon at Pillina before it's fully charged when he sees Pilina launching a mouth blast at Gohan and Pilina counters with another mouth blast which knocks Piccolo unconscious; in his mind, Piccolo sees Nail & Kami pointing towards Gohan defending Piccolo and Gohan apologizes to Piccolo by saying letting his guard down lead to Piccolo having to launch the Special Beam Cannon before fully focousing his energy. Gohan fights the Universe 6 Namekians while Piccolo says he should apologize to Gohan for letting himself be overwhelmed by the Universe 6 Namekians' fighting spirit and he is determined to fight to the fullest extent alongside Gohan; Rabanra, Zarbuto & Zirloin praise Goku & the twins for their efforts and they charge an energy attack that looks like a black heart called the "Pretty Black Hole".
Rabanra, Zarbuto & Zirloin throw the Pretty Black Hole on top of Goku & the twins and Goku comments about the weight being heavier than Bulma's training rooms while also finding out that he can't perform Instant Transmission whie being crushed by the Pretty Black Hole; Rabanra, Zarbuto & Zirloin reveal that they intend to knock Goku & the twins off the arena by having the Pretty Black Hole break through the arena. Goku says the Universe 2 Team continues to surprise him with the "power of love" but he prefers the "power of fury"; Goku powers up to Super Saiyan Blue and charges a Kamehameha towards the Pretty Black Hole while Gohan charges a Kamehameha towards the Universe 6 Namekians; Pilina counters with a mouth blast which leads to a beam struggle with Gohan's Kamehameha. Saonel closes in on Gohan but Piccolo launches the Special Beam Cannon which hits both Saonel & Pilina (Saonel is impressed by the power of the Universe 7 Namekian) and leads to Gohan winning the beam struggle; at the same time, Goku's Kamehameha sucessfuly reaches Rabanra, Zarbuto & Zirloin. This leads to the trio from Universe 2 and the Universe 6 Namekians being blasted off the arena at the same time; the Grand Minister declares that Universe 2 & Universe 6 will both be erased from existance and Frieza notes that (Autonomous) Ultra Instinct didn't appear this time while Whis fears it may become harder for Goku to reactivate (Autonomous) Ultra Instinct if he becomes used to fighting in extreme conditions.
The Omni-Kings prepare to erase Universe 2 & Universe 6 while Universe 2's Supreme Kai assures the trio that they put up a valiant fight and Jerez suggests that they take their defeat with dignity. The Maiden Squadron/Kamikaze Fireballs transform and the Universe 2 Team give a farewell pose before being erased from existance; Android 17 & Android 18 acknowledge that they can respect the Universe 2 Team after fighting them in the tournament. Vados bids Champa farewell and proceeds to sit with the Universe 7 characters in the spectator seats (much to Champa's annoyance); Caulifla powers up to Super Saiyan to (jokingly) chase after the Universe 6 Namkeians and Cabba bids Vegeta farewell while also wishing him luck. Champa calls out to Beerus and sticks his tounge out towards his brother before being erased from existance. The episode ends with Beerus saying "nothing else to say", Vegeta preparing to fight Catopesra (while saying he is in a bad mood) and the Narrator revealing that 13 minutes remain in the Tournament of Power.
I admit that I didn't expect 2 universes to be erased from existance at once but I suppose I can see why it happened since it has been awhile since a universe was fully eliminated from the Tournament of Power; I also admit that I had initally thought the Universe 6 Team would have been the "3rd place" universe in the tournament. It was nice to have some insight on Saonel & Pilina in this episode and it makes sense that Saonel & Pilina would merge with multiple Namekians before the tournament; I also liked how Nail & Kami made an apperance within Piccolo's mind in this episode. Seeing Goku team up with the twins was pretty cool and seeing Gohan defend Piccolo was rather heart warming thinking back to when Piccolo defended Gohan. Beerus & Champa's exchange stood out to me and was quite a way to end the episode. At this point in time, half the number of participating universes have been fully eliminated from the Tournament of Power and I imagine more full eliminations will occur sooner rather than later.
Gohan and Piccolo's victory was my favorite. Like many of said, it felt like a real full circle moment in the franchise. I'll have to refresh myself on Mystic Gohan but it's like SS3 but without the rapid drain on ki?
Figures U2 would be long winded even as they're being obliterated. I also expected as much from Champa.
Goku can only go SS Blue for an instant and just what did the narrator say - 13 minutes left? Not good. But if we got Mystic Gohan, Frieza yet to go gold, 2 Androids, Piccolo, and Vegeta. Things are looking good for U7. Though heh, I admit I don't know who the other 2 universes left are... 11 is the Pride, 4 is the one Roshi took out that duck guy, and 3 is the one the dude Vegeta is fighting is from?
Mystic/Ultimate/Potential Unleashed is more powerful than SSJ3, without the energy drain. At present, Gohan had increased that power via meditation between episodes 88-90.
I'll start off by saying X-Men 97 has been a blast to watch. As someone who grew up exposed to the films and cameos on other shows, it was definitely a different treat seeing how both iterations of the franchise handle the characters and their world.
Professor X's speech in today's episode was powerful ... nuff said.
With regards to Matt Braly, I prefer the weekly release. Binging is terrible for an entire season to be released in one run and back in 2015/2016, when it started becoming a thing, there were people concerned over that.
Sometimes, I really question on why these streamers seems to be so selective on which show should get the weekly release treatment or not. Giving every show the binge format is unsustainable. Sure, there are some exceptions, but not every show needs it.
