The big battle scene this episode was awesome, but we have some really dark and uncomfortable scenes this episode too. The torture scene especially. Between this and the JoJo episode, extreme violence on Toonami is back.
I thought that this episode was pretty good. That opening scene was really intense. Just seeing Levi move around the city was impressive and helped to create more tension. His confrontation with Kenny in the bar was also pretty noteworthy. It was a weird Western vibe, but Levi was smart in using the rifle to shoot him and then try to distract the others in order to escape.
Considering that people were chasing after them at the end of the previous episode, I should have expected that Levi's message was about how they have to kill people now. I couldn't really blame Jean for being unsure to kill. They've been trained to protect the people from Titans. Even though we know that the Titans are people, or at least some of them are, most of the main characters don't know about that. They just see them as monsters that need to be killed off to save humanity. They don't have a reason like that to justify killing other people. I think that you could say that they're acting out of self-defense, especially with what Armin did to protect Jean, and they wanted to save their friends too. But that doesn't really help their consciousnesses either.
At first, I thought that they were just adding human enemies because they were tired of the main premise of the show, but they actually addressed it a lot more than I expected, especially with Armin. He has been the most gentle out of the main three leads, so it isn't surprising that he'd be broken up over killing someone, even if it was to protect one of his friends. The guilt was eating him up and it didn't help when they would hear them torturing the other soldiers. Saying that they aren't good people anymore was definitely telling. Even though these are the characters we're supposed to root for, they aren't exactly the most noble or moral characters in this situation either. They aren't villains and the other side doesn't look particularly good either, but it is a lot harder for them to justify their actions.
Those torture scenes were pretty intense. They even went as far as using psychological torture, which was surprisingly more effective. Historia being the true heir to the throne would definitely make them want to get a hold of her. Wanting to eat Eren sounded pretty strange. I don't know if they want to throw in human eating other humans, but it wouldn't be too surprising either. Overall, it was a pretty good episode.
With regards to Matt Braly, I prefer the weekly release. Binging is terrible for an entire season to be released in one run and back in 2015/2016, when it started becoming a thing, there were people concerned over that.
Sometimes, I really question on why these streamers seems to be so selective on which show should get the weekly release treatment or not. Giving every show the binge format is unsustainable. Sure, there are some exceptions, but not every show needs it.
"Mr. Jones" by Counting Crows was written about how lead vocalist Adam Duritz wanted fame in order to feel loved. He then got fame and had a breakdown soon after; he has since done an altered version live, where he warns about how getting famous was a mistake.
