Trying not to be excited about another Batman DTV...but it's... a Mignola story and Lovecraft tribute being adapted! Curious if this is from the canon stuff or a stand alone. I hope the latter because I'd like to see how close Lukic or whoever is supervising pushed the designs to look like Mignola vs. Timm's Gotham by Gaslight.

This is almost certainly a stand alone like Batman: Gotham by Gaslight or Superman: Red Son.

Yeah, I assume this is a standalone release considering this is coming out under the 'DC Animated Movie' banner. I would say this is the movie I'm most excited about next year. The graphic novel is great, but people are not so precious about it that they would cry afoul of changes in the course of the adaptation. Has the potential to be something special.

I wonder if this is Sam Liu's upcoming project? He's about due for something new by now.

Good point. Around September 2021, Liu said he was coming out of preproduction on a project, it would fit this would come out fall 2023. Could be this one.

I can't imagine this as anything other than stand-alone. If you read the collected graphic novel, you'll know what I mean.

I enjoyed Gotham by Gaslight so I'm down for more Mignola Batman, and for a story I've never even heard before ;).

At least it's the only Batman movie next year :p.

This could be fun. In a more horror kind of way. I'm curious to see how the designs will look. Or what changes (if any) they make from the comics.

I think it's pretty much confirmed this will be a stand-alone film, at most maybe make it a sequel of sorts to Gotham by Gaslight if they can manage that.

I think that The Doom that Came to Gotham and Gotham by Gaslight should remain unconnected. The stories are very different from one another and I think that they are separated by several decades.

I only have this story in it's miniseries form (three issues). I've never picked up the collected edition. Seeing what it's going for on the secondary market, I think I'll wait for a new printing!

I guess "The Demon Within" from The New Batman Adventures could be included as a bonus episode on the release. Justice League's "The Terror Beyond" could also work since the monsters were inspired by Lovecraft's works, but Batman doesn't appear in there.

DC just provided a little extra confirmation that it is indeed based on the Mignola story, not just borrowing the title:

Batman: The Doom that Came to Gotham is inspired by the 2000-2001 Elseworlds miniseries written by Mike Mignola and Richard Pace and illustrated by Troy Nixey. (If you haven’t read that one, you should. It’s wild and packed with Lovecraftian imagery, as Mignola is well-known for.)

I haven't read it, but is there a big twist that they could change like they have in the past?
There's probably a few things that could be done, like shifting the setting backwards or forwards a bit in time or adding/deleting characters. The story is just long enough that the screenplay might streamline the narrative just a bit.

I think the Superman TAS episode with Doctor Fate might be a better fit than "The Demon Within" to showcase Lovecraft-like monsters.

Sure, I was only thinking "The Demon Within" might have more in common with the movie - Batman, Etrigan, Gotham, and whatever else. :p "The Hand of Fate" from Superman: TAS could also be included as a bonus episode.
