AS Losing Nearly All of Their Fox Shows...and Getting Them Back

When I was younger I was all interested in this weird Space Ghost show...I was also a kid that watched the Simpsons reruns as early as age 7...

I remember the Adult Swim block on Sundays and it began my interest...Mission Hill, Home Movies & The Oblongs...but the rest of the shows kinda frightened me at ages 9-10 lol

But then when I was about 11 in 2003-04, I tuned in nightly for this Family Guy show when it was summer and I had no bed time. Family Guy & Futurama nightly...then I had the guts to watch ATHF....then my first bit of Anime with Case Closed! It was a nightly routine. Then on Sundays we had it all....Space Ghost, Mission Hill, ATHF, Brak Show, Oblongs, Sealab 2021, Tom Goes to the Mayor. I was hooked, but then saddened when school was back and 10pm was too late. But then I found Too Funny to Sleep on TBS Fridays. I would sneak up on Fridays too.

As the years went on...I found great shows like Venture Bros, Cowboy Bebop, Robot Chicken, Superjail....but Family Guy & Futurama were the foundation. Even as Futurama left....even as I lost interest in Adult Swim and Family guy....even as I got Netflix in 2011.....turning on Family Guy on TV with nothing else on was always the best comfort food. Even to this day I still would always know AS was the one channel I could turn on before bed....as an adult I could watch without a bed time lol!

Family Guy/Futurama really changed the game on Adult Swim. It made it the block that changed late night television. It was how we took away the power of Leno/Letterman...it made other networks counter....even Nick at Nite had to add more modern programs to start to compete. It too creativity to another level. The block where all of us weirdos could blend together...hard metal fans, hipsters, Nas fans, dark humor, toilet humor, nihilism, Anime, libertarians, socialists etc etc etc. We felt at home.

Family Guy has been awful for years. Adult Swim isn't needed or the same as it was in 2003-2004. It's a new world. But I think Family Guy leaving is something to be sad about, it's not really going to change much about my life now or any viewing habits, but a sign that many of us are now old. I was 11 when I became a nightly viewer and I'm 28 today. Someone who was 23 at the time is now 40. We'll never get to relive that fun time during the cultural wasteland of the 2000's, but it was a true home for us and tip of the hat to Mike Lazzo and the guys!

Adult Swim airing Family Guy made me realize what the appeal of the show was. Before that when it was just on Fox, I had shrugged it off as yet another lame Simpsons rip-off after having watched the first episode.

Now that Family Guy is off Adult Swim, will the revenues for the show decline to a point where they have to make budget cuts on the show? Or is the show still profitable that it will be unaffected?

I personally think Family Guy is long past its prime. Consider its decline in quality, how much longer can the show continue?

I wonder if AS will put Close Enough on the block. There was that Harley Quinn marathon a month or so ago, and CN proper has added Jellystone, so there is precedent for putting HBO Max originals on CN.

They will continue to run as long as Fox and Seth MacFarlane agrees.

but future of MacFarlane's shows are in question after he expressed dislike of Fox as name brand due to associated with cable news, but Fox may not care and continue to pay to make more episodes.

I don't think revenues on AS really factor in to the new episodes on FOX as much as you think. They do factor in syndication and such, but those deals will continue to be attached to the other seasons which already make so much anyways. But the new episodes will stay on as long as they can get like 1-2 million viewers a week for new episodes.

It draws fine on the Fox Network. And now they can air it on FXX. They may not get the rights fees from AS anymore, but they're going to get a good amount of ad revenue now that they're the home of Family Guy & The Simpsons.

Soon enough FXX with have Futurama & King of the Hill to go along with those shows. Linear TV is dying anyways, but they'll make a profit.

Something tells me when FOX planned to give a cable network syndication rights to "The Simpsons," Turner would've LOVED to nab them for Adult Swim, but then FOX realized the Simpsons would've been too precious for others to touch (though they're OK with some local stations, even The CW affiliates, rerunning the episodes), so they just stuck the Simpsons on their own FXX to play it safe. And then Disney bought the FOX animated shows, and one thing just led to another...

FOX seemed to be planning this for a while. As was pointed out on Twitter, AS stopped getting new Family Guy episodes in 2017, before Disney had publicly announced its intention to buy Fox.

Disney's an easy scapegoat, but AS would have probably lost FG with or without them.

The agreement to get local stations to air the Simpsons in the 90's was there was no cable deals allowed for a period of time. Nobody knew how long the Simpsons was going to be on the air at the time. When the changes were allowed, they had bidders like Nick at Nite/ Viacom total, TBS/Adult Swim, WGN America (Hmm I want that universe) and others, even Netflix wanted the rights, FXX had to pay for the rights, they had to pay $750 million, nothing was stuck on anything. ‘The Simpsons’ Lands $750 Mil Cable Syndication, VOD Pact with FXX .

So, I guess AS can just get those shows back willy-nilly now?

KOTH came back a few weeks ago, and now Futurama is returning on December 27.

This is gonna be very interesting for Adult Swim.

First, King of the Hill, and now, Futurama.

I thought years ago when Disney bought Fox, Adult Swim will be losing its Fox shows. What really makes them to decide to change my mind now? Contract renewals or what?

My theory: the cable industry has been spooked by streaming, so all the channels are scrambling to rerun shows with proven followings to keep the ratings at an acceptable level. The situation is so desperate that corporate rivals are now willing to share the rights to key programs like Futurama and the Star Trek series, while the rights-holders just rake in the cash. Everybody wins -- except people like me, who wonder what we might be missing out on when the same handful of shows take up space on multiple channels.

Hmm. That could be a possibility.

I think Disney wants the "big three" (The Simpsons, Bob's Burgers, Family Guy) and possibly alongside American Dad! (once TBS stops renewing the show) airing exclusively on their networks, since they're more mainstream and popular than say, King of the Hill. Not to mention they're still ongoing and producing new episodes. I'm pretty sure Disney wouldn't mind making deals with other non-sister networks regarding the ended FOX toons (King of the Hill, The Cleveland Show, Futurama, etc.).

Well, FXX is only airing both of those shows during the day, so Disney probably gave Adult Swim shared rights since they can only air it at night and won't directly compete with them.

I don't think that cable channels should be treated as exclusivity over contents and they aren't same as streaming. USA aired a lot of CBS programming for example and Sundance does with Law & Order. Nick does with WB shows and TNT does a lot of non-WB/pre-1986 MGM contents.

Due to shutdown of NBCSN, USA is going to air a lot of sporting programming next year.

Streaming usually fight over rights but as for live channels, it is different story and it is just like cooperation with other networks.

KOTH and Futurama are very godsend to Adult Swim, so if Simpsons is available for syndication, there is no doubt that Adult Swim will air this.

FXX sign off at 4 am EST and air infomercial since Adult Swim is on air all night.

I consider channels air infomercial as off air or sign off.

The newly merged Warner Bros. Discovery is axing scripted programming for TBS and TNT.

American Dad! counts as scripted programming. It could be cancelled soon. Two more seasons were ordered late last year, but they could be TBS' last without a chance for renewal.
