Watchmen Chapter 1

Alan Moore’s Watchmen hit with an atom bomb — or giant squid — when it was released to comic shops in the mid-80s. Long before The Boys, this was the original tale of dysfunctional superheroes and extremely unsubtle satire, and it changed the industry. Moore intended to use the Charlton Comics superheroes that DC had just inherited, but the request was turned down and he had to make up original characters.

Those characters have now turned into icons that have appeared across multiple media, but strangely, never really animation (unless you count the unofficial Harry Partridge short, which you don’t). That changes next month when Warner Bros releases Watchmen Chapter 1, a co-production with Paramount (who must still own the movie rights after Zack Snyder’s polarizing 2000s adaption).

This adaption, however, will be 100% faithful to the comic…and long enough that it needs to be told in two parts. The trailer is short but gets the job done, displaying a rapid series of clips from the first half of the story while Rorschach growls “I do not do this thing because it is permitted; I do it because I have to.”

WB has enlisted a long list of Who’s Whos to bring this Cold War tale to life. The cast includes Matthew Rhys as Dan Dreiberg / Nite Owl, Katee Sackhoff as Laurie Juspeczyk / Silk Spectre, Titus Welliver as Rorschach / Walter Kovacs, Troy Baker as Adrian Veidt / Ozymandias, Adrienne Barbeau as Sally Jupiter / the older Silk Spectre, Corey Burton as Captain Metropolis, Michael Cerveris as Dr. Manhattan, Jeffrey Combs as Moloch, John Marshall Jones as Hooded Justice, Yuri Lowenthal as Wally Weaver, Geoff Pierson as Hollis Mason, Kari Wahlgren as Janey Slater and Rick D. Wasserman as The Comedian…plus Grey DeLisle, Kelly Hu, Max Koch, Phil LaMarr, Dwight Schultz and Jason Spisak in unspecified roles.

Watchmen Chapter 1 is expected to be rated R for Dr. Manhattan’s lack of pants and a few other elements. It will be released to digital August 13 and to Blu-Ray and 4K Blu-Ray August 27. Chapter 2 is expected to arrive later in 2024.
