DreamWorks Animation has had a pretty solid record of adapting books into well liked movies. This includes 2017’s Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, based on the books by Dav Pilkey. Now another Dav Pilkey book series is getting the big screen treatment in the form of Dog Man, which is coming out on January 31, 2025. Here’s everything you need to know:

The Dog Man movie follows a loyal police dog and his human owner who get into a freak accident. Through the power of weird surgery, the two are fused together, and become the hero known as Dog Man. The plot synopsis for the film reads: “As Dog Man embraces his new identity and strives to impress his Chief, he must stop the pretty evil plots of feline supervillain Petey the Cat. Petey’s latest plan is to clone himself, creating the kitten Lil Petey, to double his ability to do crime stuff. Things get complicated, though, when Lil Petey forges an unexpected bond with Dog Man. When Lil Petey falls into the clutches of a common enemy, Dog Man and Petey reluctantly join forces in an action-packed race against time to rescue the young kitten. In the process, they discover the power of family (and kittens!) to bring even the most hostile foes together.”

The movie is directed by animation veteran Peter Hastings, who has worked on many notable shows. He’s one of the main writers for shows like Animaniacs, Pinky And The Brain, and Tiny Toon Adventures. He’s no stranger to DreamWorks though, having spearheaded shows like Kung Fu Panda: Legends Of Awesomeness, Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight, and The Epic Tales Of Captain Underpants. Spearheading the latter show definitely gives him credibility in making another project based on Dav Pilkey’s book

The star studded voice cast for the movie includes Lil Rel Howery as the Chief, Pete Davidson as Petey The Cat, Isla Fisher as TV reporter Sarah Hatoff, Poppy Liu as Petey’s assistant, Butler, Stephen Root as Grampa, Billy Boyd as Sarah’s cameraman, Seamus, and Ricky Gervais as Flippy the fish.

The movie, as mentioned, comes out January 31, 2025, and is distributed by Universal Pictures. Comment below if you’re excited for the movie!
