Aniplex of America just dropped major pieces of anime news related to the massively popular “Fate” franchise. US fans have been clamoring for a streaming release for the Heaven’s Feel movie trilogy. Although it is available on digital stores, it has been missing from major streaming services. But now the official “Fate/Stay Night” X profile (formerly Twitter) just confirmed that the “Heaven’s Feel” trilogy will finally come to Hulu and Crunchyroll on December 19th.

Interesting to note that Aniplex stated it will be a cable premiere without specifying WHERE on cable. Ever since Chiller’s obscure short lived anime block shut down, Adult Swim ‘s Toonami block has been the only cable network to air an anime block. Are we going to see a surprise competitor to Toonami emerge? Or maybe it is indeed airing Toonami? We’ll get more clarity eventually.
Anyway, Fate is one of the biggest anime franchises that you may have never heard of, and Ufotable’s three major Fate projects Fate/Zero, Unlimited Blade Works, and the Heaven’s Feel movies have been the series to establish Ufotable as one of the most popular studios for action anime. For those unfamiliar with the franchise, Fate was originally a visual novel, essentially the video game equivalent of a choose your own adventure game. It is about a group of people participating in a battle royal for the Holy Grail, using avatars based on historical and mythological figures, such as King Arthur. It had three branching paths with three different love interests for the protagonist. In 2006, Studio DEEN created an adaptation of the first route (Fate/Stay Night 2006 is available on Hidive). The Unlimited Blade Works tv series (available on Crunchyroll and coming next year to cable) and Heaven’s Feel movie trilogy (coming to Hulu and Crunchyroll December 26) adapt the other two routes. There is also Fate/Zero (available on Crunchyroll) Ufotable’s beloved prequel series, and bajillions of other spinoffs of this series that would take forever to explain.
Fate fans should be pretty excited about these Fate releases. Stay tuned for additional “Fate” news in the weeks ahead.
