When it comes to animation, you never know which way Netflix is going to zig or zag. Today they woke up, got out of bed and thought “I think we’ll make a whole show out of that Exploding Kittens card game.”

Exploding Kittens was introduced to the world with a Kickstarter campaign that made headlines for earning more money than any previous crowdfunding effort (this was 2015, so the record has likely been broken since). The mechanics of it are simple: be the last one in your party to have your cat explode. It was created by game designers Elan Lee and Shane Small, with art by the Oatmeal guy.

Before playing, a number of cat-detonating cards are inserted into the deck that is precisely one less than the number of people playing. Then they take turns drawing cards until one is left standing — but it’s not entirely based on luck. Each card serves a purpose: attack cards, cards that negate the effects of other cards, and cards that save you from having to draw that turn add some strategy into the thing.

But the question remains: how do you make a whole show out of this? Well, the showrunners are taking some liberties with the plot, or lack thereof. The short synposis states that “the eternal conflict between Heaven and Hell reaches epic proportions when both God and the Devil are sent to Earth — in the bodies of chunky house cats.” If that sounds weird to you, it’s just scratching the surface: some of the jokes in the game are far stranger.

The Exploding Kittens series will star Tom Ellis (Lucifer), Abraham Lim (The Boys), Lucy Liu (Elementary), Ally Maki (Toy Story 4), Mark Proksch (What We Do In The Shadows) and Sasheer Zamata (Woke). We don’t know who is playing what, but yes, we are aware Ellis played the devil already.

Exploding Kittens: The Show won’t be ready until sometime in 2023, but before then, Netflix will be releasing a mobile version of the card game exclusively on the Netflix Games app.
