The Emoji Movie

Sony Pictures Animation’s The Emoji Movie hit theaters in its premiere weekend with an estimated $25.65 million in ticket sales, placing it #2 on the box office charts behind Warner Bros’ Dunkirk, which held onto its top spot with an estimated $28.13 million. The movie was almost universally reviled by critics and earned about half or less of what this year’s other major animated releases grossed in their premiere weekends (with the exception of DreamWorks Animation’s Captain Underpants, which earned about $23.8 million in its premiere weekend), but the studio has stated that it’s happy with the number (perhaps due to the movie’s relatively low $50 million budget).
