Pixar gave us our first look at Elio back when their previous movie, Inside Out 2, was released in theaters. It was about a minute long, just enough time to establish “Elio” was the name of a kid and the plot is that he gets abducted by aliens. Today the studio released another minute of footage, enough to gather a bit more about Elio — both the kid and the movie.

It turns out Elio WANTS to get abducted. He’s been trying to get tractor-beamed into a UFO his whole life. He doesn’t fit in among Earthlings and believes he is destined to live among aliens. But being so small and of limited resources, there’s not much he can do to stand out against the vastness of the universe….wait, never mind, the UFO just came for him.

Elio has been invited to the Communiverse, a paradise resort for extraterrestrials from all over the galaxies. But why him? Because Elio told them a little white lie: the club is rather elite and they believe he’s the leader of Earth. More happens than just that, but further details will have to wait for the full trailer. All we know is “he’ll have to form unexpected bonds, navigate a crisis of intergalactic proportions and make sure he doesn’t lose the opportunity to live out his ultimate dream.”

Elio stars the voices of Yonas Kibreab as “The Leader Of Uh Earth,” Zoe Saldaña as Aunt Olga, Remy Edgerly as Glordon, Brad Garrett as Lord Grigon, Jameela Jamil as Ambassador Questa and Shirley Henderson as OOOOO. It is directed by Madeline Sharafian (Burrow SparkShort), Domee Shi (Bao, Turning Red) and Adrian Molina (co-screenwriter/co-director of Coco), and produced by Mary Alice Drumm (associate producer of Coco).

If this movie had stuck to its original schedule, it would have been out already (original release date: March 2024) but it needed a bit more time to bake. As you know, Disney hasn’t had the best luck with sci-fi premises. Let’s hope Elio has what it takes to succeed. Watch for it June 13, 2025.
