E3 2019: Shenmue 3 PC Version Will Be An Epic Games Store Exclusive

What would this E3 be without a new peek at Shenmue 3? There’s a brand-new trailer out today with an English dub! You’ll be able to play it in Japanese if you don’t like the voices. The game looks better than ever:

Now for the news that made you click this article…yes it’s true, the PC version has become exclusive to the Epic Games Store. It’s not pretty, but it’s the truth.

“We are happy to announce that Shenmue III for PC will be will be an Epic Games Store exclusive,” reads a statement from Ys Net. “Development for Shenmue III has been moving forward using Unreal Engine and the support we have received from Epic has been excellent. But most importantly, in looking for the most enjoyable experience on PC, it was decided together with Deep Silver after much discussion that the Epic Games Store would be the best distribution platform option.”

Whether you believe that statement or you’re certain the exchange of money played a role, it won’t change the fact that you’ll need an Epic Games Store account to play Shenmue 3 on PC. There has been a lot of rage directed at Epic over moves like this, but the reality is that the Steam platform has held a near-monopoly on the PC gaming market for quite some time, and fresh competition will result in better deals for consumers. (The side effect is that it also results in things like this happening.)

Shenmue 3 arrives November 19 on Playstation 4 and PC.
