E3 2016: Insomniac’s New Spider-Man Game Is Just The Beginning

E3-goers were pleasantly surprised by the appearance of Spider-Man in a new title coming from Insomniac Games, but he won’t be alone for long. According to Jay Ong, Marvel’s vice president of gaming, this marks the beginning of an intended series of AAA Marvel superhero games.

You might have noticed that video games are the one area that Marvel has allowed DC to overtake it in. Well, no longer! Ong says they’re fighting back and getting their own Batman: Arkham equivalent. “When I joined Marvel two years ago, I came in with a mandate to usher in a new era for Marvel Games,” Ong said to Polygon.

“We have a treasure trove of the best superhero characters on earth. What can we do with this to create truly epic games? Is [Spider-Man] a signal of things to come? Oh, yes. Absolutely. And we can’t wait to tell the world about it.”

So who else might be making Marvel console games? We already know. Marvel has hired Telltale Games, Sony Interactive Entertainment and Warner Bros.’ TT Games to begin work on Marvel superhero titles. Exactly who they’ll star is still a mystery. Telltale is already finishing up a Batman game, so they’re working on both sides of the fence.

As for the Spider-Man game, is it meant to tie in with Spider-Man Homecoming, or not? Ong says no, and  for good reason. “In this modern day and age, that model doesn’t work anymore. Things like [games] you cannot under-resource.”

“You have to give the development time … to do justice to the game. We think, ‘How do we make the game better? How do we help our partners make the game better?'” Hopefully this new commitment to quality will result in the most memorable Marvel games ever.
