We’ve got a launch date at last for Akira Toriyama’s final Dragon Ball series, Dragon Ball Daima. (While Dragon Ball will probably continue past this point, this is the final series to have the creator’s personal involvement.)
Toriyama had a fair amount of input in the production of Dragon Ball Daima; he supervised the story and character designs, and according to executive producer Akio Iyoku, went “beyond his usual capacity.” Said character designs are by Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru (Digimon Adventure), and Yoshitaka Yashima and Aya Komaki serve as directors. They will continue on in his absence.
Over 90 seconds of clips have been released in the trailer below, and while they don’t answer all the questions about the plot, they shed some light on it. We start off in space, we hear someone chanting a magic spell, there’s an explosion of starlight, and suddenly….everyone’s a lot younger! Dragon Ball Babies, they’ll make their dreams come true!
As for why this just happened, Goku and his friends initially know about as much as you do. Toriyama is quoted as saying “in order to fix things, they’ll head off to a new world! Since Goku has to make up for his petite size, he uses his nyoibo (power pole) to fight, something not seen in a long time. It’s a grand adventure with intense action in an unknown and mysterious world.”
The show will introduce two new characters, Glorio and Panzy, who are revealed for the first time in the trailer. If Goku restores everyone’s ages, will Glorio and Panzy take on adult form as well, or is this the age they are naturally? Only the show holds the answers.
Dragon Ball Daima will premiere globally outside Japan on Crunchyroll’s streaming service October 11, with subsequent episodes premiering at the same time they air in Japan. Only the subtitled version will be available at first; we’ll let you know about the dub version when we hear of it.
