Donkey Kong Country 2 Comes To Switch September 23

donkey kong country 2

Excellent news for those who subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest, considered by many to be the best of the SNES DKC trilogy, will be added to the service later this month.

King K. Rool is back and he hasn’t just nabbed DK’s bananas, he’s nabbed DK! It’s up to Diddy to rescue him, joined by his helicopter-haired pal Dixie in this pirate-themed adventure. The first DKC was already great on its own but DKC2 managed to top it in every way. The levels are great, the score is fantastic and the sense of adventure is enthralling. And now it’s free (sorta, as part of a service that costs $20 a year).

Two more games will be added on the same day…one, Mario’s Super Picross, is a puzzle game we never got in the US. The game is untranslated, but the mechanics themselves are all numbers and don’t need an English explanation. There will also be something called “The Peace Keepers”…a beat ’em up released by Jaleco in 1994. It’s lloosely connected to Rival Turf and Brawl Brothers, which were also released by Jaleco and considered a trilogy in Japan.

On the NES side of things, we have SCAT….no, seriously, there’s an NES game called SCAT, in all caps. It stands for “Special Cybernetic Attack Team,” and in Japan the game was called “Final Mission” — not sure what was wrong with that, or why SCAT was considered better. The hilarious Americanization of this shooter doesn’t stop with the title screen…the two selectable characters are named Arnold and Sigourney. They might have been able to get away with Arnold as a generic name, but there is only one Sigourney on the face of the Earth.

But DKC2 is what we’re all here for. That game, and three others, will be added to Nintendo Switch Online September 23.
