Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness was a massive hit at the box office when it arrived last weekend, making over $170 million dollars domestically, and it’s already over $500 million globally. So, the question was that of how much would it make in its second weekend? Would it maintain a rather high number, or, would it have a big drop? Well, while the projections aren’t final, we can say that it will be the No.1 million at the box office…but it did indeed have a stiff drop.
According to projections, the movie is set to make $62 million in its second weekend. That’s over $100 million less than its first weekend. Now, to be fair, this kind of drop is pretty typical for the higher-grossing movies. Mainly because just about everyone will see it in its first weekend, and only the dedicated or the “biggest fans” will see it multiple times.
That’s not to say that Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness is failing after its grand opening, but it is telling in its own way that the drop was this steep despite not having any true competition from other films in its second weekend.
And while many have praised the film for its various elements and story, there are just as many coming out after seeing the movie that didn’t like all that Marvel did with Scarlet Witch, the Illuminati, and the very bizarre ending scene.
But, that being said, given that it’s definitely going to make more than its first film (which only did $80 million in its first weekend), we can be assured that we’re going to get a third Doctor Strange movie. In fact, that was very much setup by the mid-credits sequence.
We’ll still pay attention to all that happens with the box office totals, but as Marvel said, Doctor Strange will return.
