Disney’s Planes took in an estimated $22.2 million (estimated) in ticket sales in its premiere weekend for a third-place finish at the box office behind Elysium ($30.4M) and We’re the Millers ($26.56M). While the movie had a modest production budget (reported to be about $50 million), it is also the third straight animated family film to open below the $25 million mark this summer, and well below the $60+ million opening weekends for both Cars movies, from which Planes is a spinoff.

Disney showed off the planned sequel Planes: Fire and Rescue at this past weekend’s D23 Expo, with a planned release date of July 18, 2014.
