The decision has been made….who made the final cut? Who will take the role of China’s legendary warrior when Disney puts out its new version of Mulan?
Disney announced the actress who will play the title character this morning. The role of Mulan has been given to Liu Yifei, who also goes by Crystal Liu and has been seen in films like like The Forbidden Kingdom and Outcast. Mulan will be her most visible role in the West to date.
The majority of live-action films on Disney’s schedule are risk-averse redos of hand-drawn films from the 90’s renaissance and other periods. Remakes of Aladdin and The Lion King are in the cooker, as well as a new Dumbo and a sequel to the mostly-CGI Jungle Book. The new Mulan begins filming next year with a target release sometime in the year after that.
Niki Caro will be directing the film. Chris Bender, Jason Reed, and Jake Weiner will serve as producers. The script was written by Lauren Hynek and Elizabeth Martin, then revised by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (who wrote Jurassic World). Those of you hoping for a big loud reprise of “I’ll Make A Man Out Of You” may be let down; Caro has suggested the live-action version isn’t going to be a musical. Instead she describes it as “a big girly martial arts epic,” whatever that means.
Mulan is currently targeted for 2019 on Disney’s release schedule.
