The Mandalorian was the television hit of last fall and the perfect launch program for the Disney+ venture, which is still going strong despite not having much in the way of original content since that point. It would be a no-brainer, then, to keep hitting the “renew” button for as long as they can get away with it. The Mouse confirmed today that the show has a guaranteed third season in the works.
Season 3 — that’s great! Remember all the things that happened in Season 2? There was the….oh right, we don’t have Season 2 yet, and we won’t for several months. That’s how early this renewal is, but if you recall, Disney actually ordered a Season 2 for the series before Season 1 or Disney+ itself premiered. It takes a while to make shows like this, especially with a pandemic weighing down production.
Speaking of that, is a delay inevitable for Season 2? Surprisingly….no. Production wrapped on the second season of The Mandalorian in early March, just before everything in Hollywood began to shut down. Like a Lucasfilm hero in a fedora, they made it through the door the second before it slammed shut. All that’s left is post-production, which can be done at home with the right equipment.
Season One of The Mandalorian was worthy of its hype, and definitely the best Star Wars product to be released in late 2019 (if there was anything else, it didn’t matter). If you haven’t seen Season 1 yet…..then pop culture must have been very confusing to you last year; “why is Yoda a baby now?” Go watch the darn thing.
As for Season 3, creator Jon Favreau says he’s writing scripts, and the art department has already begun cooking up concept paintings. It’s anybody’s guess when we’ll actually get it, but we will be seeing the further adventures of Mando and The Child this fall on Disney+. Maybe even Ahsoka. Who knows?
