Since the protagonist of Idea Factory’s Death end re;Quest knows he’s in a video game, how meta can a JRPG get? We’ll find out together when this game comes out early next year, but we can tell you right now, the answer is “very.”

Arata Mizunashi works as a video game programmer, and those skills are about to become very useful. His friend Shina has disappeared inside a virtual reality game, World’s Odyssey. He’s got to find her, but then they’ll both face a bigger problem: getting out. Only 1% of all players have successfully beaten World’s Odyssey.

That’s where Arata’s hacking skills come into play! He can manipulate and cheat the code like nobody else — and since you’re playing as him, so can you. For example, battles against monsters are normally turn-based, but if you feel like doing something else, you can flip the gameplay style and turn it into a fighting game or an FPS.

Arata’s skills become exceptionally powerful when he reaches Glitch Mode, which happens whenever a character in your party takes enough damage. Use Glitch Mode at that moment to annihilate your enemies….or, wait a few turns to charge it up even more! Use caution, though — if Glitch Mode is built up for too long without a release, your own character will become incapacitated.

Idea Factory recently published the screenshots that appear throughout this post, showing off the various powers of Glitch Mode. The game also has these features:

  • Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction? – Jump between reality and in-game modes, as players will need to investigate in real world view to solve the mysterious inner-workings of the World Odyssey, and switch to an in-game view mode to battle against glitched-out monsters. Choose options wisely, as your decision can change the game’s ending!
  • Turn-Based RPGs Flipped Upside Down – In this turn-based command battle system, you can roam freely and duke it out with fearsome monsters. During battle, players can change the game’s genre from a first-person shooter to even a fighting game!
  • You’re Buggin’ Out – While exploring, players will need to activate character-specific dungeon skills to access hard-to-reach areas and hidden treasures!
  • Follow the White Rabbit and Discover a Bug Infested World – In this hyper-realistic game world, players must help out Shina escape a game universe filled with infected bosses and mesmerizing environments.

You’ll be able to glitch to your heart’s content once Death end re;Quest comes out for Playstation 4 in early 2019.
