If you’re eagerly waiting for this year’s DC Fandome event to happen, you’ll be waiting for a while. Warner Bros Discovery confirmed today they have no plans to hold one of those things in 2022, and who knows about 2023 and beyond. 2020 and 2021 may be the only Fandomes that ever were.
To this outsider, the reason feels obvious. Warner Bros can’t have a virtual event devoted to all things DC because they have slashed and burned half of what they planned to show, and the other half is that Flash movie. They’re too busy making customers angry to make them pleased!
But on the record, WB claims a different reason. “With the return of in-person events, Warner Bros. Discovery is excited to be able to engage with our fans live at numerous comic-cons around the world and will not be scheduling DC FanDome for 2022,” they say.
And, well, this logic makes sense. DC Fandome was invented in the first place because the COVID pandemic prevented anyone from going to an actual convention and WB had projects to hype up any way they could. So they threw together an Internet-based convention that anyone could attend in their boxer shorts. It worked at what it was meant to do and got the word about future DC movies and shows out there.
We had hopes Fandome would prove so successful that WB would just continue doing it after in-person conventions returned as a part of modern life. It might’ve happened under anyone else, but definitely not under Mr. Belt Tightener.
So WB has no plans to hold their own comic convention, but promises to show off whatever they have at the traditional venues like NYCC — which isn’t far off from now. That event will be held this October from the 6th to the 9th. Guess we’ll see if they show up!
