Science SARU is an anime studio fast rising in fame after producing Scott Pilgrim Takes Off for Netflix last year. They’ve also produced Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!, DEVILMAN crybaby, and two episodes of Star Wars Visions (“T0-B1” and “Akakiri”). This year they’ll be taking on the adaption of a manga that’s also becoming popular, Dan Da Dan.

Dan Da Dan has an intriguing premise: it’s about two teenagers who are both into the paranormal, but despite this can’t get along. The problem is specific: Momo, who comes from a family of spirit mediums, believes in ghosts, but not aliens. Okarun, her classmate, is convinced aliens are visiting Earth — but thinks ghosts don’t exist.

Momo and Okarun each resolve to prove their beliefs to each other. Momo goes to an abandoned hospital where there have been UFO sightings, while Okarun goes to a tunnel people say is haunted. They find evidence all right, but not the type they were looking for! This city is about to be overrun with space invaders AND yokai at the SAME TIME — with Momo and Okarun caught in the middle!

Note how neither of these people are named Dan. There is no character named “Dan Da Dan” in the series. The manga lists the title as one word (“Dandadan”) but it doesn’t appear to mean anything. If you know what the name is referring to, let us know in the comments — we’d be interested to find out.

The Japanese voice cast for Dan Da Dan stars Shion Wakayama (Takina Inoue in Lycoris Recoil) as Momo; Natsuki Hanae (Tanjiro Kamado in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba) as Okarun; Mayumi Tanaka (Monkey D. Luffy in One Piece) as Turbo Granny, and Kazuya Nakai (Roronoa Zoro in One Piece) as the Serpoians.

Crunchyroll has announced global distribution rights to Dan Da Dan and the series will also be available on Netflix. The show sounds pretty wild and we’ll definitely be checking it out.
