Critical Role Animated Series “Legend Of Vox Machina” Revealed

critical role

We’ve never brought up Critical Role on this website, but we could. It’s a liveplay D&D stream made up of professional cartoon voice actors, so it qualifies as industry news. The series has won millions of fans, lots of tie-in merchandise, and has two lengthy campaigns to its name so far: Vox Machina and Mighty Nein.

With so much cartoon talent on the roster, why not make an actual cartoon? Two years ago, the team launched a Kickstarter for a proposed animated series based on the Vox Machina campaign. It became one of the site’s most successful crowdfunds ever, raking in over eleven million dollars and guaranteeing a solid first season. Amazon stepped in at that point and picked up the series, tacking on a Season 2 while they were at it.

“Legend of Vox Machina” is its name, and the very first peek at it was uploaded by the team today. The designs were revealed, along with the involvement of Phil Bourassa (veteran designer of superhero cartoons like Young Justice). Not much of the cartoon itself was shown, but you can learn a lot about the production:

The original campaign of Critical Role starred VAs Laura Bailey, Taliesin Jaffe, Ashley Johnson, Liam O’Brien, Matthew Mercer, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, and Tavis Willingham. They will all be doing voices for the cartoon (naturally). Titmouse is handling the animation and Brandon Auman (Star Wars: Resistance) and Chris Prynoski (Metalocalypse) are executive producers.

Legend Of Vox Machina should serve as a good entry point for those who have never watched Critical Role (a series with such a densely packed mythology and such LOOOONG episodes that jumping in mid-campaign only results in confusion). But the show still isn’t ready and may not be for a while. Fortunately a good jump-in point for the show itself is coming up TOMORROW in the form of “Exandria Unlimited,” a brand-new mini-campaign with some new cast members. Follow Critical Role on Twitch and YouTube to watch it unfold.
