Courage The Cowardly Dog Returns In Scooby Doo Crossover Movie

courage the cowardly dog

90s and early 2000s Cartoon Network viewers, you’ll want to hear this: Courage the Cowardly Dog is back. But he couldn’t return alone: he’s riding with the Scooby Gang in a new crossover movie, Straight Outta Nowhere: Scooby Doo Meets Courage The Cowardly Dog.

The Mystery Machine has found its way to Nowhere, Kansas in pursuit of a mysterious object. There, they run into Muriel and Eustace Bagge and their pink dog Couirage..and not long after that, encounter a very well-timed and topical threat of giant cicada monsters. Cue the “ZOINKS” and the screaming, only from two canines this time. This being Scooby Doo, however, there’s something deeper going on.

Rumor has it this project started as an episode of “Scooby Doo And Guess Who” but the plot grew larger than an ordinary episode could contain. It’s the first time these two characters have met up, that is if you don’t consider CN promos to be canon:

Marty Grabstein returns as the voice of Courage, and the Scooby players are the same ones that voice the characters in all modern projects: Matthew Lillard as Shaggy Rogers, Grey Griffin as Daphne Blake, Kate Micucci as Velma Dinkley, and the last surviving veteran Frank Welker as Fred Jones and Scooby himself. The 72-minute movie was written by Mike Ryan and directed and produced by Cecilia Aranovich. (If you’re looking for creator John Dilworth in this list…hmm, so are we.)

One wonders why no one thought of this sooner; Scooby Doo and Courage share a lot of themes (running from monsters being the main one). But according to Aranovich, it was a bit more difficult than expected: “Merging the two worlds in a cohesive manner was one of the most challenging aspects of production. But I feel we found the right balance by bringing in the design elements and the color palette from the Courage world, as well as infusing Scooby and the gang with the more over-the-top takes and reactions that are so characteristic of Courage.”

“The movie is filled with Easter eggs from the first Courage series, and it is packed with quirky humor, offbeat characters, outlandish action scenes and, of course, the mystery factor that is inherent in every Scooby-Doo! plot.”

Straight Outta Nowhere: Scooby Doo Meets Courage The Cowardly Dog will be out on DVD and digital September 14. Three classic Scooby Doo episodes will be included as bonus features.
