Coming This January: The PS4 Back Button Attachment

For all those who have looked down at their Playstation 4 controllers and felt that 18 buttons just aren’t enough, Sony hears you. This week the manufacturer announced a new add-on attachment that will add two extra buttons to the controller, for an even total of 20.

What’s the purpose of this? That’s up to you to decide. The attachment’s buttons have no function on their own, but can be mapped to any existing function another button does. The idea is to make those tasks slightly easier by making them accessible on a button you already have your finger on anyway. The XBox has had back buttons for quite a while, Nintendo flirts with them off and on, but this is Sony’s first stab at such a thing.

The attachment also includes a round OLED display, and its purpose is to help you program the buttons to the functions you want, and cycle through three program modes. One thing they’re not telling us is if that screen is always on…if it is, that’s a problem for a controller that already has poor battery life due to that glowing bar they won’t let you turn off!

  • Responsive Back Buttons and High-fidelity OLED Screen: The two back buttons can map up to 16 different actions such as triangle, circle, R1 and R2 to name a few and provide amazing tactile feedback, so you can jump and slide without missing a beat. The attachment also features an integrated OLED display that provides real time information around button assignments.
  • Highly Configurable: A dedicated button allows you to remap back button inputs on the fly, so you are always prepared no matter what game you’re playing. Furthermore, you can save and choose up to three different profiles for use in various games and there is also a headset pass-through for connecting any 3.5mm wired headset to the controller.
  • Developed by PlayStation: The product is tested and approved for all of your favorite PlayStation 4 and PlayStation VR titles, and is built with the ergonomics of the DS4 in mind.

This could be an indication Sony has a similar function in mind for the Playstation 5 controller….but since nobody’s seen it yet, we can’t say for certain. The PS4 Back Button Attachment comes out January 23, 2020 for a price of $29.99.
