Akira 35th Anniversary Manga Set2017 Comics & Collectibles Holiday Gift Guide - Akira 35th Anniversary Manga Set

If you think you know Katsuhiro Otomo’s Akira because of the animated movie, think again: much like Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind before it, the original Akira manga is a science fiction epic that covers an even greater range of events, characters and subplots. In a dystopian version of Tokyo in the year 2019, teenage biker Shotaro Kaneda is caught up in matters of Government conspiracies and revolutionary movements when his best friend Tetsuo is injured and found to possess immense psychic powers similar to the titular Akira, who caused the city’s near destruction years ago in 1988. As disparate factions seek to either control or eliminate Tetsuo, Kaneda practically fights a one-man battle to survive the apocalypse.

Even for those who have read or owned Akira books already, Kodansha USA’s premium release delivers long-overdue features for the first time. In contrast to the original release this edition reads in the traditional right-to-left format now taken for granted for translated Japanese comics, and original Japanese text signifying sound effects are also retained. The complete saga is reprinted in six beautiful hardcover tomes along with the Akira Club artbook as a companion, all gathered together in a handsome premium box. By any standard Akira is an undisputed classic of anime and manga 35 years later, and this edition is certain to be the definitive release of the original work for many years to come. The set currently runs $126.67 on Amazon.

For anyone who’d consider themselves a committed fans of comics, Watchmen is known as a classic from Dave Gibbons and Alan Moore that shifted the landscape of the medium for better and for worse in the 1980s. Here dystopian fiction collides with superhero comics to present a brutal depiction of Cold War and nuclear anxieties, along with a harsh challenge to the fantasy of incognito vigilantes fighting for their idea of justice. A disturbing murder mystery provides a backdrop and an excuse to explore the many profiles of Watchmen’s disturbed and not-so-super cast, and the ultimate truth behind it all challenges the reader by compelling us to ask how they – and the world – could have gone so wrong.

Watchmen has been praised by many for being a meticulous and complex work with many layers to its narrative in both the written word and in the art, which sets the Annotated Edition apart for the way it delves into it all in official detail not seen up until now. The book examines the material panel by panel and page by page by drawing upon past critical commentary as well as interviews from writer Dave Gibbons. The annotated notes come from famed editor Leslie S. Klinger, who won an Edgar award his work on The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes and also worked on the Annoated Edition for Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman comics.
