Fans of JG Quintel’s work are going to want to make sure their HBO Max subscriptions are properly renewed next month, as a fresh batch of episodes from his latest creation land on the service. It’s not Regular Show. But it’s…..close enough.

Close Enough follows Josh and Emily, a thirtysomething couple who are just trying to survive as young parents in LA — quite the herculean task even without the kind of things that tend to happen in Quintel cartoons. Close Enough not only uses the same art style as Regular Show, but a similar story structure: each mini-episode starts out with some normal event, which grows wilder with each passing minute until the fate of the universe is at stake toward the end.

Quintel described the show’s origin in a 2020 interview: “As we were wrapping up Regular Show in 2017, I was looking for new ideas. The first show coincided with me having a job and being out of college, and Close Enough is about getting married, starting a family, trying to buy a house. It’s about transitioning from being just yourself and doing whatever you want to taking care of other people in your life.”

Close Enough had a strange development history: originally developed for TBS, a short one-minute pilot of clips from proposed episodes was uploaded by the cable channel in 2017 and just left there for years while Regular Show fanatics tore their hair out over what it meant. The first season was not actually produced until years later, and was initially meant for a TBS premiere until HBO Max became a thing and needed immediate content. Season 3 is the first season created specifically with HBO Max in mind. As the trailer suggests, that means Josh and Emily’s kid can swear!

April is proving to be a busy month for streaming, with a lot of anticipated shows making their return sometime within those 30 days (don’t forget Undone on Amazon Prime April 29!) Close Enough comes back April 7 with sixteen new adventures in eight episodes.
