The Boy and the Beast

TheBoyandtheBeastPromo2The official Japanese website for Studio Chizu’s The Boy and the Beast was recently updated with a full-length trailer and new promotional artwork as the film approaches its July 11th theatrical release in Japan.

“Beast” tells the story of a lonely young boy that strays into a parallel world inhabited by supernatural creatures, where the bearlike beastman Kumatetsu names him Kyuta and becomes his companion and mentor. When the movie was first announced last December, Mr. Hosoda described its theme as “Are they going to be father and son…?” The new media spotlights some of the time Kyuta and Kumatetsu spend together and introduces some new characters, and also reveals that viewers will see Kyuta grow up into his teenage years.

A production of Studio Chizu and Nippon TV, The Boy and the Beast is being both directed and written by Mamoru Hosoda (Wolf Children, Summer Wars). The film’s Japanese voice talent stars Koji Yakusho as Kumatetsu in addition to Aoi Miyazaki and Shota Sometani as young and teenage Kyuta respectively. Actress Suzu Hirose also makes her voice acting debut as Kaede, a high school student Kyuta meets when he’s older. The French company Gaumont is handling the film’s distribution in France and other territories around the world and intends to begin screening the film in late 2015 or early 2016.
